Driving roughly half way and then getting the train drops the petrol to $6750, 180 day season ticket is $1200. Getting the train most of the way costs about $1300 a year in petrol and $1500 season ticket. So it's pretty obvious it'd have to be the train. Adds about half an hour to travel time, but the cost savings are huge.

When faced with travel times and costs like that, would it not be cheaper to rent a room in a flat share mon - thurs. Loads of big sites here have blokes sharing cheap units to save 20 hours a week of commuting, never seems to worry anyone after a 10 hour day all most people do is eat shower and sleep anyway.

Yea, it'd certainly be the best option if I get the job. Fire up my laptop, watch some movies or TV shows, do some work etc.

That's definitely an option I'll be looking at. Got a couple of mates with a spare room who I'll be speaking to if I land the gig.

Indeed.
Go a mate who lives and works in Manchester but works in Glasgow two days a week and stays with SIL.

Well, must be something in that karma thing - because I got the job! Had the interview 10 days ago, turned out there where eight others in the frame . Had a follow-up phone interview this Monday. Got the job offer this morning.

Start working for Surf Lifesaving Australia as an IT bod at the head office, which is situated right on Bondi beach. Flexible work (two days in Sydney, three at home), good money, clear promotion ladder. Very happy.

It is, isn't it. What's more, having that pool downstairs will make getting in shape for my proficiency (surf patrol) that bit easier as I can swim at lunchtime.

Yea, I could work from home more often if I wanted, but to be honest, after living out here in the sticks for three years, I'm looking forward to a bit of city bustle.
