Can anyone recommend a good magazine about the internet and PC's generally? I am trying to stay bang up to date with developments.

I used to get Web User in the UK - It was fortnightly, tells you what new websites, software & hardware there is and what is coming. Also tutorials on doing stuff (wouldn't that have been useful for Azureus, Audacity etc!). I got my mum to send me a couple of copies to see if it is worth subscribing to but much of it is only relative to the UK so not worth the expense / delay. And to be honest it is a bit depressing reading about how many shopping websites there are, how fast / cheap everyone's broadband is etc.

I've seen Web User on sale in the newsagents here - didn't think it was too uk-centric, but it has been a while. The best of the local PC magazines is probably APC - covers mainly hardware and software. There is a new web magazine that just launched, saw it in the newsagents the other day, but can't remember the name of it.

I am reading the second one my mum sent right now and I have to admit, while the earlier pages have a lot of stuff about sites that are UK-centric (GNER, Comet etc) this edition has quite a lot of general stuff at the back. Given that mum buys it for me and puts it in the same parcel as comics she sends my daughter it is completely free so I might let her carry on sending it

I will also try APC that you recommend and see if I can spot one with "New" splashed all over it. Cheers

Slashdot sounds like a very dodgy online pervert sex club That should encourage lots of people to go look - which I haven't

We gave an 'Atomic' subscription to my techie Brother In Law, can't vouch for it's contents but he's pretty clued-up ... might be worth a look?

I tend to head for the web for info myself and the occasional copy of Q or RollingStone for my bog-bound entertainment

Why not use your time, to search the internet for magazines available to you in your locality.

Or perhaps visit some online sites as VIM and many of us do, and learn as you go.
That way you can read what you want to read about whats important to you, and at your own pace. Plus someone doesnt piss on it on the toilet floor, cos you left it there by accident

To be honest, one of the main intentions is something to pass the time while on the train, although the way they are going at the moment I can't get a seat so reading isn't really an option.

Thanks for the link, but the ones on that site seem to be either focused on gamers or buying guides. Web User was perfect - not too techy and as entertaining as it was informative. I think I will give it another go.

Can you recommend any websites then that are not too techy? I am a keen amateur but no more. I read the BBC News Technology page every day but I am really looking for ideas around the internet / software tools.
