I just did a quick google of her case & it highlights the amount of corruption within the Indonesian legal system. She took part in a sting to trap the ringleaders. One got a yr [young and attractive] another got 4 yrs & the ringleader who lives in Bali got 6 yrs. She got the death penalty. The wiki page is here It doesn't give details about the alleged death threats on the son.

Particularly if you choose to do it in a country where the legal system is a) heavily weighted against foreigners and b) open to corruption from the highest bidder.

Yep, 'carry a bit of cash with your drivers license/passport, don't open your wallet though, they'll see that as an invitation to take the lot'. One of several corruption warnings I received, in Malaysia that was though. some real idiots about

I do recall doing that in Bali when pulled over for not wearing a helmet on a moped.

This is very true. The UK and Australia have a very liberal judicial system that at times appears heavily in favour of the offender. This certainly in't the same elsewhere in the world. Even the US justice system is pretty harsh in comparison.
