I've got mates who live in Kings Heath, Brum. All Saint's Rd to be precise, I've never been so can only go by what they say, they love the place, can't understand why we upped sticks to come out here. I know Brum is a big place but if the area they live in is as nice as they say then the whole of it can't be a shithole, maybe just the area you live in. Like I say it's your opinion, maybe you share it with a few thousand others but the population of the U.K is not dwindling it's increasing, obviously more people like it than don't:confused: cresta, hand on heart,i am not out to fall out with you and thats the truth.i dont suppose you care. ask your friends what whitchall farm is like?,thats in kings heath. i worked their last year ,it was quite nice having stones bounced off the back of your head as you were working, and coming in the next day and all your work is on the floor..oh and a couple of houses burnt to the floor..,the kids have no fear,i must admit,i was frightened at times.. as regards people coming into this country,,i am not going down that road... |
Re: if no one else will ask ,i will???
I have lived in the Black Country (Dudley area) which was very industrial and overcrowded and further south which was very charming and rural. We have also lived in Belgium for 3 years and have parents that have upped sticks to move to America. We have had good times here and some really rough times but we are still here and probably will be for the forseeable future. I must say that if I had the choice to return to the Balck Country I would be far less willing to pack up and return to the UK than if I had the choice to return to our lovely little rural village in the South West. It would take a lot for life where I am now to be worse in my mind than my life would be back in the Midlands. This is only my opinion but it is why we first looked at heading here, and why, when given the choice of returning to the UK or heading over here to the middle of nowhere without ever having been before, we came here. I have made a few friends who are expats here and we love to get together to bitch about the place and let off steam but most of my friends are Aussies and agree with every word.
On balance this was the right move for us and, very much like Aston Man, we knew that it would take a real disaster to make us give up and return to the UK. However although we hadn't been here before we have travelled and we came here with the belief that small town living is the same pretty much the world over and life is what you make of it. 18 months later and we have more close friends here than we ever had in the UK, I come on here at various points to offer any advice that I can or generally talk pish, but am busy most of the time here. I am definately of the opinion that if somewhere in Aus doesn't suit and you have the chance to try elsewhere then try it, but I do understand that it can be exhausting to start again from scratch (that is how I felt when I first got here). We have never had that choice because we arrived here knowing that it was tied to Ian's work and there was little chance of him finding alternative work in his area anywhere else in Aus. Anyway good luck to those who are struggling to get here or struggling with being here. Nicky |

It irks me to read threads like this one, simply because everyone living here has felt what your feeling, that's the difference, we know how you feel yet until you've been here you can't imagine the hopeless desperation of homesickness, the sheer frustration of endless fruitless job interviews, the realisation that even with two incomes you still can't afford the lifestyle you dreamed of nor the agony of one partner loving it while the other hates it. You can't appreciate how irksome it is to have to sit with only a candle for a light because the local power company has failed to invest year on year choosing to pay dividends to share holders instead. Believe me when I say I honestly hope you find your dream life here in Australia, we did. Sadly others don't settle and are stuck here for one reason or another or have returned and choose to post their experiences. They are all entitled to their opinions just as you are entitled to yours............................................. ... Now, All I ask as a moderator is that you don't abuse or insult those who have already been there and done that:D |

The place you say has changed since we all left hasn't really changed that much, for some holds more hope of a good life than they actually found on these distant shores.
