I love sorbet too but give me a dairy-free gelato and I'll eat it every day.
There's a place on Glebe Point Rd in Sydney that does one or two, so it's possible. A little place that opened up in Singapore doing rather wacky flavours once made me some soy ice-cream; it was actually very good. Went to a great gelato place the other week... it was in Enmore. Delicious! :) And the night trade after concerts... it was packed. |

I've been there... yes, that dairy free option seems to be pretty popular atm.

There's a fantastic Ivce cream shop that's opened down at Rainbow Beach, I find that Deb now prefers to go fishing there just so we can have one of their excellent ice creams on the way home;) Her old favourite place was at Hervey Bay for much the same reasons:cool: |
Re: Ice cream
I am going to have to ask, what is a gelato?
I have heard people say it but I assumed it was just the Australian word for ice cream, is it something different then. |

Gelato is just like a low fat ice cream, it's lower in butterfat & not as creamy as normal ice cream. I like it because it's crisper & sharper, more like a frozen fruit ice lolly than a creamy cone:blink: |

10p for a 99 flake with nuts and chocholate sauce was a once a year treat Why were they called 99s anyway??? Stephen Arcari had an Ice Cream shop at 99 Portobello High Street, Edinburgh, in 1922, and sold ice creams with half a flake in them and they became called 99's as that was where they could buy them, at number 99. |

If you say you're selling gelato, by law it has to have a certain percentage of fat in it.... Ice cream, by law, is much higher in fat. I'm glad we're not in the EU over here. I'm sure some people would get their arses sued for their so called 'ice cream'. I love the full on custard ice creams... vanilla custard, then churned and frozen... Amazing. Had delicious ice cream in the UK.... but then I was a regular visitor at the Cheshire Ice Cream place as a kid so I expect it to be sublime these days. I'm disappointed when it's not. |

eg: GELATO: In Italian, gelato means “frozen.†Gelato is a frozen dessert that originated in Italy and is known for its intense flavors, artisan presentation and nutritional value. Considered somewhat similar to ice cream, it differs in ingredients, production, flavoring, presentation, nutrition and texture. http://www.whygelato.com/gelato101/glossary.asp Most Americans think of gelato as ice cream. However, it is not really “ice cream,†since it is made from milk and not cream like its American cousin. Using milk gives gelato a smoother and subtler texture than the frozen ice cream we scoop from containers bought at our local supermarket. In Italy, gelato is almost always purchased at una gelateria (think ice cream shop), and there is a long cultural tradition of going out to eat gelato. http://becomingitalianwordbyword.typepad.com/ |

I would really encourage anyone to try Ben and Jerry's - now available in Australia thank goodness.
It is very expensive but I would probably pay double for it.... BB |
