I know i should have bigger things to worry about but why the hell do australians call bedding MANCHESTER?

In the industrial revolution most of the Uk's cotton was produced in the mills in Lancashire and around MANCHESTER. I guess that's the reason!

If that is all you have to worry about Jazzys you're doing alright mate
It's called Manchester cos that is where all the cotton mills were back in 'the old country' and hence where all bedding etc was made.
I found it really weird when we first arrived but now have just got used to it.
Hope you are settling in ok after the initial 'high'.

I went with a friend visiting from the UK to a shop to buy a towel. Upon being told that it would be in the Manchester department, my friend bemusedly asked if that was between the Birmingham and Carlisle departments.
Needless to say the shop assistant had no idea what he was talking about!

Jazzys- I know what you mean, I asked the same question on another thread a few months ago! Got all the same answers.
Still seems a bit arbitrary to me though - I bet the majority of it all never came from Manchester! Probably ignorant convicts making it up...
Am used to it now though!

If that was all i had to worry about i'd be a very happy man indeed. As it happens i have more to worry about today than i've had in a long time. i lost my job this week and my ex missus and daughter are over for xmas. Can i afford it, no i can't.
