Emergency Management Australia are saying that there are probably less people killed than the media reports are suggesting - certainly at present they are not asking for urban search and rescue etc from Aus, so lets all pray that EMA are right, and that things aren't as bad as they seemed at first.

These things are true, but (a) it's not as if they actually attract or cause natural disasters, and (b) they're not always relevant to the extent and scale of the damage; modern countries can be just as badly affected, regardless of how well prepared they believe themselves to be.

The USA is one of the most afluent and highly developed nations on Earth, but by the time Hurricane Katrina was finished with her, she looked like a 3rd World country.

All her modern infrastructure was swept away as if it had never been there; her levees were obliterated, her houses smashed to matchsticks and rubble; her plumbing overwhelmed; her civic buildings drowned in mud and filth; her transport systems destroyed and her utilities (electric, gas, phone, etc.) completely annihilated.

So you see, high-tech infrastructure is no guarantee of safety or security in the event of a natural disaster.

Indeed, and living in an earthquake zone I am aware of this, however building methods, rescue capability and so on can make a big difference to the number of casualties.
