I can't totally help, but I lived in Borneo for 9 years, and loved it. Didn't live any where remote but did go quite deep in the jungle on quite a few occasions, with no problems. Actually never took malaria medication, it's harder if you live somewhere permanently you have to weigh up the pros and cons. I never heard of any one actually getting malaria while I was there, but it's probably sensible if only there for a short time.
Hope he enjoys the experience, I still miss the place.
