My first job in the UK was a 3 minute walk. Then I commuted into Birmingham - anything from an hour to three hours each way. Then I got a couple of jobs on the edge of Coventry which were 20 minutes each way.
Now it takes me 50 minutes, 30 of that on the train relaxing with my ipod and a book. The only place I will find jobs for my level are in the city centre so I would have to live closer to the city to reduce that.

I am retired so it's no problem for me I don't even have to get up to get my pension
however the OH commutes by train for 40 to 45 mins a pleasant journey he is guaranteed a seat (the trains start here) no stress no changes and he reads a book then gets off for a 2 minute stroll to work.

For me it takes around 5 minutes, but for the main wage earner in the family it averages out at around 40 minutes each way. Both are by car, one ours and the other a company ute.

We travel approx 150 Kms round trip per day. It takes about an hour to get to work and about 1hr 15mins to get home. Our car is only 2.5 yrs old and is going in for its 100k service on friday. The fuel bill is a bit high but I wouldnt trade where I live for living in the city.

Time has gone quickly I reckon, it wasn't long ago we were both in the planning stage.
