I agree I can usually tell immediately who is who with their avatar.

In fact I get a bitt miffed when people change them - takes me a while to adjust.

I think avatars are important if you are meeting people. Sometimes in real life you may be introduced, and you might not remember their user name, but if you ask what their avatar is, you can visualise, and then their username and online personality comes to you.
