Hello
This might seem like an odd question but to all those living in Brisbane, how do you find the heat?
Did it take you a while to adjust to the heat?
We're weighing up Melbourne and Brisbane at the moment. I know Melbourne can have hot summers but generally it seems cooler than Brisbane.
I like the heat I have to say (better than the cold!) but was wondering what it was like living in it 365 days a year....?

oh thats an easy one: you just walk outside!!!!

Sorry - in all seriousness you get used to it after a couple of years. There'll still be a couple of weeks each year where its horribly sticky and humid, but airconditioning is widely available and not to be underestimated!
(Make sure your home has air con - then EVERYTHING is bearable)

The way that things are going with climate change, air-con will soon be essential in most parts of Australia. If we had a new house built now we would definitely look at solar panels on the roof to generate electricity, you sell the surplus to the electricity companies, when it is really hot and you need it you have enough to drive your air-conditioner. Also think about top of the range insulation, rather more than has been tradition for the last thirty years. I've also read that there is now triple glazing that is far more effective than double glazing but you will also need a bit more than a few batts in the roof and walls. Most houses here are brick veneer, think about double brick with an insulated cavity.

The heat is one thing but what you may find surprising is just how cold it can get in the winter especially in the mornings......inside the house.
Don't underestimate the cold either...it is not always hot.

Melbourne on the other hand, in my experience, is freezing and unpleasantly grey.
You can cop a breeze in more locations than just the coast. We live right out west, top of a hill, and get a cracking breeze almost constantly. Louvre windows and crimsafe screens are great, leave them open all day and night, keeps the house lovely.

Hi
Take advice from rebnatoli and live by bayside or gold coast OR invest in air conditioning and make sure house is built using NORTH EAST aspect ...
Generally speaking we have 10 months good weather and 2 months horrible weather
Cheers

Its going to be 36 degrees here apparently today.. I find that since it has gotten over 30 degrees I don't go out as much.. I am trying to acclimatise slowly
OH is in Melbourne.. he says he is feeling cold.. think he can't wait to get back to here (we're about 2 hours north of Brisbane)..
We don't have aircon but we have plenty of fans and picked a Queenslander style house which has lots of drafty windows and our dining table is outside so we eat outdoors... saves the Ants trapsing in all the time..
It does get coldish in the winter tho (we were here back in August/July) but nothing too severe.. unlike Melbourne so I have heard..
Atleast your washing dries each day! lmao!

Its certainly not hot 365 days a year! Live by the coast and you'll be fine - GC or Bayside Brisbane are fine - you get lots of sea breezes and only really a couple of weeks that are bad (although in the 18 months we have been here probably only about 4 days where its been too humid and only 1 night that was unbearable). We only have air con in the bedrooms and rarely use it - have had the ceiling fans on a few times recently but our house is well designed for heat (not so good for cold!) and there's always the pool to cool off in. I think the cold is worse we've had 2 really cold winters and we were totally unprepared for how cold it gets!
We still haven't used Air Con this summer, the ceiling fans are still sufficient, although if it hits the 37°C that they were talking about, I may use them today.
The highest December on record was 36.6°C on 25th December 2001.
The last two days haven't gone over 30.1°C.
The weather in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
In mid winter, July 2007, the temperature in Brisbane, QLD, Australia varied between 3.8°C and 26.7°C.
There were 14 days in July 2007 that the temperature went below 8°C, mainly overnight.
Comparing the temperatures at 9am, they ranged between 11.1°C and 17.6°C, with 2 days being below 12°C.
At 3pm, the range was between 15.1°C and 26.2°C, with 14 days being below 20°C at 3pm, although still above 15°C.
In Summer, looking at January 2008, the temperature in Brisbane, QLD, Australia varied between 17.6°C and 31.3°C.
The 9am temperature varied between 22.0°C and 28.7°C, whilst the 3pm temperature varied between 22.3°C and 30.5°C.
There were 9 days when the temperature exceeded 30°C in Brisbane during January 2008.

For some reason today is the first day we have found it uncomfortable, we have only been here 3 months though. Usually just have the ceiling fans on but don't have them in the living or family rooms. We are in a lowset with fences at the back that are higher than the windows and we are down in a bit of dip,so we don't get much breeze through the windows. Think the screens also stop what little that does gets through. Air con is on for the first time to cool our youngest down but will have to go out in a bit to the shopping centre as it is still really warm.

QLD Newspaper Headlines:
Stinking hot today
It is now 28°C in our area, wasn't too bad after all, but we do get the breezes
Stinking hot today
UPDATE: GOOD news Brisbane.
The weather bureau says today will not be as hot as originally thought. Instead of hitting 37 Celsius, it will be ... 35. Phew.

I agree with the other posters. We live bayside and only used the aircon two days last year, and it has not been on yet this year. We find the ceiling fans are ok for overnight. It does get cold in winter, particularly as I leave for work quite early, and I use an electric blanket sometimes (never thought I would buy one lol).
The weather is lovely for most of the year, we went to Melbourne in August and couldn't believe how grey and miserable it was.......reminded me too much of the Uk. I am sure it is not like that all the time but I can remember last summer Melbourne was way hotter than Brisbane on numerous occasions. Much prefer the consistency that we have here
