Help! What could this noise be?

Both myself and my husband work from home - me upstairs, him down pretty much directly below me.
On Thursday I kept being disturbed by a noise - if you imagine dropping glass or a flower pot from a height and smashing it, it sounded like that.
It sounded like it came from just outside, and could be heard by me upstairs but not him downstairs. (He did later hear it too, while upstairs, so it's not me going mad!).
There's no obvious building work going on in our street, and we looked at the roof from street level but couldn't see any missing tiles. There's nothing inside the house that's making the noise.
Eventually we decided that it must be some building work being done several streets away, but then I heard it again at about 11pm on Friday, so ruled tat out.
Can hear it again now (3 times in the last 10 minutes), loud enough to make me jump, but it can only be heard from this specific room, not elsewhere in the house.
Any ideas? Could something be falling between the double bricks?

The house is about 3 years old. We've lived there a year, previously it was tenanted and they didn't menton any ghosts.
There wasn't a house here previously, just bush.

Have you smashed any glasses or plant pots recently - could be an echo.

It's true. Near my gran's house in the Lake district, there was an old tunnel which if you shouted in, it echoed so much that six weeks later when we were there again, you could still hear yourself.

Apparently some old slappers have the same problem, which can be disconcerting for the latest partner - 'who was that?'

Mmm, new theory. It's the ring on a mobile phone or similar instrument... like email alert warning for example.
Suspect they're quietly trying to send you crazy...
Has anyone taken out life insurance on you lately, Fo3?

Lol, ok thanks everyone. I think.
A few people have mentioned possums so if it persists I'll get a possum person round. Who would that be? Pest control?

I'm 100% sure it's a very large snake in the cavity. It wont be too long until it finds it's way into your bedroom while you're asleep at night.
