Just about to emigrate to Oz with my hubby.
Have got all of the paperwork sorted...but wouldn't mind some mental preparation....how do I get into the "emigrating zone" as I'm kind-of-sh***ing myself!?

If you're currently s*****ng yourself, you are already IN the zone.

My advice, pour a large glass of something tasty and alcoholic, remember that it's just 'stuff' and let it go.... this includes possessions, stress, angst, anxiety, and all the rest of it.
Good luck.

Ignore them. You don't need the zone. Sit back, read some crap on here, chill, read some good stuff on here, realise it'll happen regardless, enjoy the ride.
I don't remember getting stressed about any of it (well apart from a 13 year old girl).

1) imagine what a let down it would be if the whole thing was called off and you couldn't go
2) get on some tourist websites and look at all the great things to do once you get there
3) get on realestate.com.au and marvel at how much house you can get for your £
(And I agree with the 'if you're s**tting yourself then you are in the zone' comment! So true!)

So essentially what everyone is saying is I become a raging alcoholic...and that will solve all of my emigration problems.
Great!
When do you start "feeling at home" though? in a few weeks...months?

Best thing to remember....you are not in the UK anymore so try not to compare. Everything is more difficult to find......just ask!!!!!! dont struggle on and get worked up.
Go with the flow.......chill out and enjoy your new life.

Oh aye and get pished helps too

Felt at home straight away, but it took me 6 months to get a circle of friends going... A year on, it's all good.
And I move house in 3 weeks.
Bonus!

Pointers?
1) Don't have any expectations
2) Find things to substitute for the things you miss
3) Email is your friend, use it to keep in contact with friends in the UK
4) Get into the local community, join clubs (especially sporting clubs)
5) Don't, specifically, seek out other Brits
6) Go back the UK to remind yourself (or otherwise) of the 'other side'
7) 'Home' is here, wherever you are, it is not the UK (works for me)
