OMG! and there was me complaining to my mother about my son starting state high school and so far it has cost me $200 in books another $200 in hire of text books and about $200 in school uniform! and thats before I get the "voluntary" contribution and school trips!

Methinks I have gotten off lightly!

Gosh, that's cheap for international student fees! ACT and NSW are more than that for school age kids. At least you picked a good state!

That is light my 2 are going to State and subject fees for grade 10 are $480plus book hire of $300, the uniform changes in grade 10 just slightly so you have to buy it all again and why is a white shirt that the sun goes staight through:curse: $45 . Thats about a $1000 for him.

Then theres the grade 8 one which is not that much less.

But hold on its australia so we have a rebate/bonus/handout, I dont think its means tested so some of the books might be a tax deduction.

IME school fees and medical insurance things go up each year, seems a standard policy.

Independent school fees in will be going up substantially over the next few years to pay for teacher's pay rises. State teachers just got 21% over 3 years. Private schools have been given similar amounts. Also, income from investments - a big source of income for private schools- has been hit massively.

That's 6.56% per year, similar to the 6% that our Independent school fees are going up by in 2009.

That is in relation to the Education Tax Refund

Under this new ETR, families who are able to claim Family Tax benefit part A, will be able to claim part of the education related costs of their children.

The basic rule will be that they can claim 50% of an annual expenditure limit.

The initial annual limit will be:
Primary School children - $750 per year, allowing a maximum claim of $375
Secondary School children - $1,500 per year, allowing a maximum claim of $750

ABC Diamond how does that work??? I mean I get it... but as a refund how does it work - will i say get back $1125 if i spend the maximum??? or how does it work? sorry i havent done a tax refund before.

Am getting scared now about school fee rises... my daughter goes to catholic secondary, last year fees were $3600 plus $1100 laptop hire... i just got knocked back on a fees reduction and will just die if there is too much of an increase.... I guess the bill will arrive any day now.

If you have only one child in Secondary, and you spend at least $1,500 on allowable costs, then you can claim back 50% of what you have spent, up to the maximum limits of $750 for the secondary school child.

If you spend say $1,000 then you get back 50% of what you have spent, ie: $500.

If you spend $2,000, you get back $750 (50% of the $1,500), but carry the excess $500 over to next year.

You pay $1,100 for laptop hire ?? !! You can buy one for that...

Your fees also seem high for a Catholic school ? Which one is it ?

Actually the $1100 for the laptop is over two years -silly me... St Mary's Star of the Sea is the school and yes more expensive compared to the co-ed catholic school in the other direction... but I'm happy with it and it was my old school - in the old days i think my mum paid around $300 per term or something silly - how times have changed but then facilities are second to none so can't complain... just hope they dont increase too much!

Thanks for the tax info - i wasnt sure if you would just get the tax back paid or if you got the lot back (50%). I also think you can carry over any unused portion over to put towards next years ed tax relief... What i might do is buy a new computer at some stage just before i do tax.

I need to check with accountant this year but am almost certain we get no relief on education costs and this year we have paid near on $15k in fees alone.

We paid $3500 for DS laptop last year - rip-off big time - but you have no choice! (Does include tech support and a bit of software and is used for 3 years).

We pay $2750 for one child in local Catholic primary. We are in a "rich" (hah) area so have to subsidise other "poorer" schools. Joke! In the UK we used to pay £39 for 3 children at local Catholic primary and IMHO it provided a superior education to what is offered here.

Hiya,

How many days/hours at kindy is that, even at $3000 it seems cheap?

I've got Logan at the cheapest I could find other than C&K and it is $8ph. At the moment she is only going 9 hours per week (3 hours/3 mornings $72) which would work out at over $3500 for the year.

Also I thought prep through primary school was $8000 per yer?

Cheers
Mandy
