Is it possible to have dimmer switches on a halogen light?

You can but as said you need the correct dimmer type. If the transformer is electronic (generally small plastic not heavy) you need a trailing edge dimmer. If the transformer is iron core (usually big and heavy) you need a leading edge dimmer. Often though a leading edge clipsal dimmer will work fine for both.
