Is it possible to have dimmer switches on a halogen light?

Yes. We have them in our formal lounge and our TV room.

If the lights are 12V (usually MR16 type) you will need to find out what type of transformers are used. Electronic or iron-core transformers require different types of dimmers.

You can but as said you need the correct dimmer type. If the transformer is electronic (generally small plastic not heavy) you need a trailing edge dimmer. If the transformer is iron core (usually big and heavy) you need a leading edge dimmer. Often though a leading edge clipsal dimmer will work fine for both.
