I don't have children but I am quite interested by this thread. Either my parents were bad parents or times have really changed since I was a child.
Me and my sisters used to sleep over at our friend's houses quite regularly from the ages of about 11, but I think my parents met very few friends' parents. I am wondering even if they had gone to meet them though, would that have been sufficient for them to know that it was safe?

However, you are right- meeting them is no guarantee that nothing bad will happen to your child.
As I said previously, I think it's best to make sure your child knows what is and isn't acceptable, and what to do if they find themselves in a difficult situation.
