What sums up London to me is the riverboat trip we took last July. We went under Tower bridge and some chav spat on my wife. 20 minutes later we went back under the bridge and a different chav spat her chewing gum on us.

Doesn't have the same buzz as having a chunk of concrete through the windscreen on the M4 or the Kiama road though, does it? <g>.

Yes, Chittering. This one is 5 acres. Most properties here are 5 acres minimum. Room for the girls to have a pony and for me to grow lots of fruit and veggies.
I am kinda in a similiar boat-I want that life too, but my wife won't leave inner-city Sydney (I quite like Sydney though). Not many people get the chance to experience the peace and joy of living in rural Australia these days-you will sure hit yourself if you return-I'd say go for it. |

Re: Is it a good time to move back to the UK?
That property would do me if I had to live over there, few more trees would be nice but they can be planted :D Last time I was on a train from Harpenden to St Pancras or whatever the station was called, a couple of blokes got on at Elstree and started threatening each other with knives and very loud swearing. The girls were terrified, we had to get off next stop. Then coming home we had a couple of really seedy obnoxious drunks abusing everyone. First born never wants to get on a UK train again. Not every day and happens everywhere but you only remember your own experiences.

Yeah, I've never been a huge fan of Legoland and the Mrs has always equated rural with inbreds, bogans and flies. She was pleasantly surprised by Chittering.
I own a house in a rural area that would include Australia's richest families right down to outright bogans and junkies.......none of them have ever bothered me. Isnt that one of the good things about Oz-the neighbours keep to themselves (perhaps explains the inbreeding) |

Do you? how come, are you looking to move there, or did you see it on the news? Is that where "the murders" took place?

Mainly because I've found my niche here at the UWA. Getting a similar, specialised job back in the UK will be nigh on impossible. I was bloody lucky to get this job and I want to hang on to it.
Looking at other jobs I could do in the UK all come in around the 25/30 grand mark which wouldn't be enough bearing in mind the season ticket and/or fuel prices I'd have to pay. Plus I'll be 43 or 44 and there will be a full blown recession by then. It would be insanity to return. Sounds like the chitterng option then, cant have you going insane:D Reckon one of those big 'ouses would sway most women, just get her word in writing she will do the mowing/weeding/horses daily/weekly for the next 10 years, trust me, these things are such fantastic novelties with the the family/kids the first 3 weeks then it wears off and one poor sod ( me usually ) gets stuck with it all. Get it drawn up by your lawyer, and witnessed should keep em at it  |

Renth - do you really think this will work? Don't want to teach you to suck eggs but living out there will have it's own issues which I'm not really sure will cure your wife's desire to go back to the UK - and actually might make her feel even more isolated. I think as Jad says - it might seem a great idea to start with but when reality kicks in - the isolation, the daily commute, the cost of fuel.......the lack of friendly, similar, neighbours........

Re: Is it a good time to move back to the UK?
Spoke to a friend back in UK the other day. His company are laying off 1/5 of employees. Fuel is £1.20/litre. He was full of doom and gloom. The recession is really beginning to bite.
