Re: Good book
Difficult to check hundreds of posts to see if this has been posted. My first book by an Aussie author. Dirt Music by Tim Winton. Brilliant. He described in the narrative, parts of the country to which I have been and he brought them to life again. A good story well written. A good introduction to good Aussie writing if you haven't been there yet.

"Shallows" and "Blueback" - he's not the kind of author I can pick up and put down, one I really have to concentrate on. Need to get my mind back into that frame somehow! |
Re: Good book
Thanks Polly, I think you'd find Dirt Music easy enough (and, no, I'm not being rude :p) I found that it flowed very well without too much concentration.

I am reading a really tough going book of Irish history that I've borrowed off Bernie at present and the hardest thing about it is cos its his i can't read it in the bath, which is where I do most of my reading these days  I have to have a pickup and put down one to read alongside that can get soggy without it being an issue!! |

Potato Factory is my all-time favourite book I think; it has some beautiful descriptions of Hobart (a city I adore) as well as brilliant depictions of the London of the time, and its just a fantastic book.
The Power Of One was a plucky story but it wasn't going to make me sob. I'm referring to other posters now... Hmmm...I read a book called the Secret Hunters about Nazi atrocity perpetrators and their hunters- the atrocities are linked into one of several plots and only starts a fair bit into the book - you can start the book without realising that it's based on an awful subject matter - and I was missing my kids when I read it and I got a bit of dust in my eye.. 20 years ago the same author wrote the Feathermen - I've just got a 1991 Hardback First Edition on EPay..you know you're getting on when you are rereading books 2 decades on... Irish history you say Polly - Bernie can read? Hey mate - my pet hate is soggy books! Anyone else have fastidious book habits. I get peeved by people who break the spine of a book - often by the very act of picking it up and looking at it...'specially when I have got through it several times and it is as new..ah I see it's time for my medication... |

Yes I thought of you when I mentioned the book. I picked up Parts 2 and 3 - and I couldn't get into them - I may have been BCed out by then!

My only pet hate with other people borrowing my books is when they don't return them. I don't expect them to stay perfect as long as the reader enjoys them. And yes you cheeky git, he can read!! I've got a lot of his books stored here, very interesting reading. One I'm on at the moment on and off is "The Buddha's Medicine for the Mind" by Geshe Tashi Tsering. Very thought-provoking read, that gives some brilliant insights into the mind and its approiach to happiness. |

Dances with Wings - Amelia Carr
Amazon description is When the telegram arrives on a bright sunny day in 1942, Nancy feels sick with dread. But instead of wartime bad news it's from the legendary Jackie Cochran, asking Nancy to fly for Great Britain. For Nancy, a girl with flying in her blood, it's an opportunity she simply can't turn down. But that fateful decision is to trigger a series of events, with consequences that will reverberate through the generations. This one is just brilliant, several passages about flying, especially in the Second World War for the Air Transport Auxiliary - makes a change to read about women pilots! but its also a stunning love story, and not a soppy one, very evocative, historically accurate, and the descriptions of the flying are realistic and brilliant! Had me hooked and I shall certainly read it again :thumbup: |

Gonna start on Paul O'Grady's book - love him very much :) I'm reading Jasper Fforde's, The Eyre Affair at the moment, it was a bargain I couldn't resist last week. It's quirky but very enjoyable and silly. Trouble is, it's making my book wish list even longer! |
Re: Good book
Just finished Brett Hutchence book (Michael Hutchence bro) - I loved every minute, took me 2 days to read. What a mad life he has had.
Starting Paul O'Grady's autobiography tomorrow  |
