He's gorgeous. I honestly don't know how people can just dump animals on the side of the road like that.

Should add, Dont rule out finding young dogs or puppies at a refuge.

Our local one often has very young dogs and litters of puppies. Pregnant dogs and even ones in labour  have been left outside, its quite common. they even have mums and pups areas.

Also because of the pet shop thing, :curse: lots of pups are dumped once they are just past the cute size stage.

Nothing wrong with the dog, except its not so cute anymore :(

We went today to buy refill poo bags for our dog and our usual pet supply place didn't have any so we had to go to another pet shop. They had 3 adorable little kittens and 2 sweet little puppies. There was a woman there wanting to buy one of the pups for her baby for his 1st birthday present. Made me feel ill that the pet shop was going to sell it to her. It was a cute little fluff ball this morning, but in another couple of months it's going to be a full grown dog.

Rescue dog everytime for me!!!

I have 2 rescue cats who will be coming with us to Oz and I want to get a dog when we get there.

I haven't met one rescue dog that I didn't love, however I have found the over breeding of pedigrees can end up as aggression. My friend bought a pedigree only for it to bite several people including her daughter who had to have surgery.

Last year I was attacked (very badly) by my aunts well bred german shepard, not saying all pedigrees are bad....not at all....love anything with 4 legs.

I just think we should not make a profit by breeding, the cost of them is shocking.

Saw a dingo X on one rescue site......what a beautiful boy!!!!

Good luck in your search.....there are plenty of rescue pups out there.

We took a rescue dog about 6 weeks ago. By God he is doing my head in. He shits everywhere and he is thick as a plank to boot. (I hate a moronic dog)!

Me thinks the next months of Saturdays will be at puppy school with the scabby little mutt.

I do love him but he needs to play by the Commandant's rules!

Re: getting a dog - rescue?

My sister has had plenty of rescue dobermanns over the years, with various form of mistreatment in their past - they can be hard work, you need to be patient & understanding giving them time for them to build up their trust in you and others.

One had been tied up & hit - took her time to accept having a lead on, but whilst vastly improved she was always wary of people walking by with sticks or umbrellas. She just needed a reasurring hug she was ok. She was very loving, like she knew how bad things could be and how good it was to have loving people around her.

Another was a very large dobbie, who would bark aggressively to people he had met many times. For the first 5minutes he would have his muzzle on barking away at me, then would calm down have his muzzle remove & be soft as putty. My sis is good at training, but even with obedience classes there was this aggressive side to him.

The two she has now, she has had them from being puppies as she does not want all the unknowns and work a dog with messy baggage brings. She went by recommendations for breeders and would want to see mother & pup together. For both dogs she had more scrutiny done than if she was going for a job, with nailbitting waits, and joy when accepted. Much harder than walking into a store & picking one of the shelf, but is a better way to go for the dog

Go for the rescued dog!!

We got ours here:

I was very impressed with AWL, they tried to put us off adopting Jock, until they realised I had owned a spinger spaniel in the UK so I knew how mental they were.

Is that not the point to find someone who wants the dog.

I did hear the RSPCA centres here used to let theres be used by vets to train on, I assume it was the op's they needed and not just any old cut and snip.

Well, yes, but the particular dog people think they want and what they can handle are 2 different things. The dog we got had been a 'visitor' at AWL 3 times. So AWL were determined that this time whoever took him knew what Springers were like, and also, how messed up this dog was, having been abandoned 3 times.

So I understand why they were reluctant to give him to us, until I explained I'd owned springers before, and I knew the breed are a bit mental.
And he is... :p

But there are so many plus sides to him as well.... I'm just struggling to think what they are at the moment.

Hi,

I'd been reading this thread with great interest as we've been looking at getting a dog for the last few weeks or so. We were also very undecided about were and also what to get as we are 'big' dog people but can only get a small dog due to rental restrictions. We have been visiting AWL a couple of times a week and also looking in the pet shops. We were a little disturbed by seing all the cute puppies in the pet shops and then i read into the horror stories bout it all n we decided to go the rescue route.

I came across www.petrescue.com what a fab site!!

They cover Australia wide adoptions and for animals that are ok to go interstate, there is a free flight for them!

We are just going through an adoption just now n yeah, the downside is that we do not get to meet our new addition before we decide, but we have been given heaps of information and he sounds like he will fit in really well just hope he likes us!!!
