Good Morning/Evening All

We have a question, hope people can help. Any advice/info will be greatly appreciated.
We are looking to emigrate to Brisbane and are looking at what furniture items we have to ship ( leather couches a 2 & 3 seater, beds x 2, clothing and personal effects). Figuring that this will probably cost a couple of grand to ship we are thinking of selling it here and putting it towards buying brand new when we arrive.

Anyone any experiances/recommendations and advice.
Also any recommended furniture shops/web sites etc..

I would say that it depends on a couple of things.
a) how good is your stuff? Is it worth the cost of shipping?
b) How do you feel about getting rid of all your possessions & probably not making a huge amount of money from it?
We brought some of our things & got rid of all the crap. We did not bring white goods because with the exception of the washing machine, it was all getting on or in-built. We brought the bed frames & bought new mattresses here & we bought a sofa bed that was fairly new too but have bought new sofas here also.
Personally, I could not have got rid of everything & just come with suitcases but I know some people do. It is lovely when all your familiar things arrive. Mind you, we did unpack some stuff & wonder, why?????
Get some quotes from shipping agents. We found that they were very good with advising us & the company we used were very good about us changing our minds about what we were taking. (Masons)

My advice would be to bring everything - apart from the rubbish things you would get rid of anyway. I would bring even the little things that you think you would not make use of as it all adds up. Also depends on what you intend to do when you arrive as usually you buy your furniture to suit your home. So what we thought was to bring everything from home to use in the rental as otherwise you are buying new to go in the rental and then find it is not suitable if you are intending to buy a home.

I know everyone has their own opinion this is just mine.

I would bring as much as you can, then as and when you want to replace it, do a garage sale

You have to weight up the cost to ship over a say 20ft container stuffed with all your wordly goods versus the cost of replacing all that stuff.

Have a look at sample prices for the stapes e.g. white goods, suites, beds, dining room furniture, etc.

I have to say in my experience that I've found less choice, things are often of inferior quality and are often more expensive here. My advice is pack as much as you can. Treat it as your 'starter kit' and you can build up or replace as you go along, rather than starting from scratch.

We've decided to bring nothing We are going to start afresh but, after reading many posts on here, I reckon it's cheaper to take as much as you possibly can. I am taking my golf clubs though, not sure about the OH's

Less is more - well, that's what I keep trying to tell myself.

We had pretty decent furniture in the UK so got a shared 20ft container, basically the contents of a 2 bed house but with no appliances or outdoor furniture. Best thing we did, it would have cost double to replace over here. Cost just under £2,500 all incl and no problems with timescales or quarrantine. And, like Sally Claire said - it is just like Christmas when everything arrives. We think that having all of our familiar stuff around us has helped us settle in much quicker as well.

Bring as much as you can if its still in good order. The furniture here is not cheap and when you have other costs car, rent etc you can do without the extra costs of furniture as well. Just remember you will have a couple of months here before your stuff arrives so can you go without a bed etc while you wait?

We didn't ship furniture etc and only sent 5 boxes of personal stuff.

Really regretted it and wished we had taken everything with us. Hubby in particular really misses all his tools and gadgets.

Like everyone says - when our boxes arrived it felt like a little bit of home came with us.

We have just moved to Sydney from NZ and we brought nothing with us.

We do have a few boxes in storage back at my mums which we will get shipped soon. But other than that - all the furniture was sold.

Like others have posted - you need to weigh up whether the stuff you have is worth bringing because you can re furnish for reasonably cheap in Aus I have found.

I would say that this probably also depends on where you are ie larger metropolitan areas. Out of the cities, you have to add on all the transport costs!

we live on gold coast and we brought just a few boxes and a box of golf clubs
we are glad we did but then we left almost everything behind in my dads garage and our daughter used it when she got her own little house
