how do you know when you've spread enough so you don't blank

You have upto 5 hits a day. If you go over 5 in 24 hours and still give karma, the person that is the 6th, 7th etc will know it's blank because in your Latest Reputation Received logs in My Profile the blue box on the left hand side will be a lighter pale blue.

Unless you keep a check of how many you've given karma to in 24 hours you'll more than likely blank someone.

It means that you've already sent karma to that person recently, so you've got to spread some more karma around before giving to that person again.
