Default Four tomatoes cost me $6.60!

On the topic of silly prices for food items. I bought four tomatoes from my local fruit and veg shop yesterday (next to woolies). Almost died at the till when it came to $6.60 ..... $1.65 per tomato. That's 3 pounds 11p for anyone not out here yet - prepare yourselves!

They weren't organic or anything, just normal tomatoes.

Any other horror stories out there?

Food prices have shot up over the last year. Last year water shortage was blamed for high prices, then the hurricanes/floods and now petrol

We need to become hillbillies and start growing our own

$14.95 a kilo of (non-organic) parsnips nearly killed me.

(But I saw them. I had to have them. I roasted them. )

Disclaimer: I have no idea how much they'd cost in Tesco as I haven't grocery shopped in the UK for years.

the weather in south qld is almost the perfect growing climate with 300 plus days in the mid 20`s range
so go on bugger of to bunnings get some seedlings and get growing
the other thing i`ve found is that kids are more likely to eat them if they have grow them too

I was walking through the veg section at Coles the other day and just stopped dead in amazement - $17.85 a kilo for Snow Peas Holy Mother of God, just stop selling them? Who in their right mind is going to buy them

Hi think steve has the right idea, ive been looking at a shade house 6m/4m i have the plans the parts cost about $800. Aswell as helping us with weekly food bill i think kids are going to enjoy growing things. As the plans come from eco farm in qld everything is made for qld climate. GARY

I echo your comments. I have just started growing some capsicum. Tomatoes will be next.

Dear Mr Mover

What will I be able to grow in cold old Melbourne?

I have a nice area for fruit and veg. Should I cover it with netting?

Cold old Melbourne ? Yer kidding me !!!
We grow tomatoes, pumpkins, squash, carrots in our back veggie patches with no problem at all.
We get so many bloody tomatoes we end up giving them away to our friends by the bowlful !

Apart from the few months of winter, nothing wrong with the temps in Melbourne for growing all the veggies you need.

You might find this link handy for year round planting choice for a Melbourne Temperate climate...

For anything frost sensitive, make sure to wait until Melbourne Cup day (1st Tuesday in November) before planting !

I know its stupid coming from Edinburgh but I find Melbourne cold! At home I had suffocate me now duvets, inferno hot central heating and double glazing. My house has summer appeal but in winter those 20ft cathedral ceilings and full wall windows, don't seem so great!

I am going to get this house winterproofed and then it is off to gradening I go.

Know it well. A fairly intimidating place at the best of times.
