Default Fondant icing

I am attempting to decorate a birthday cake for my son who is 4 tomorrow, he wants a picture of Kwazi from the Octonauts, who is an orange pirate cat for the unacquainted! I have found a great template on the internet but it requires good old roll out fondant icing, of which I have been unable to find. Does anyone know where i might be able to buy it?

I bought some royal icing from woolies but it seems to be far too runny and if worse comes to the worse im going to have to pipe the picture on the cake, as im not the worlds greatest artist or cake decorator for that matter i really dont want to do that.

Can anyone help?

You can get a very smooth finish with pure icing sugar (sifted), water, and a small addition of glycerine. Make it just soft enough to spread and cover the cake, then cover in cling-film and roll or smooth. Remove clingfilm and allow to dry.

They do an icing mix, not to be confused with icing sugar, like I did the first time.

You can make your own with marshmallows - have a look on YouTube - a lot of videos on there showing you how.

aha well i still couldnt find any fondant icing in woolies, but didnt try coles so i tried using Royal icing instead and piped it onto the cake, it was a bit runny and was no way a masterpiece but my boy recognised who it was supposed to be and appreciated it so all was good in the end.

Havent loaded pics onto the computer yet but when i do i will put one up and you can have a giggle!

In the cakes defence although the decorating was rather average, the cake itself was rather light and moist so that was a major triumph for me as I am not known for my baking prowess.

Glad the birthday boy liked it.
I've just had to make a vegan chocolate cake at the last minute for daughter to take to school. The cake was ok, but had problems with the icing, as I can't do buttercream. I found a vegan chocolate frosting recipe, but I think they had the wrong amount of ingredients-6 tablespoons of cornflour and only one cup of sugar???? It was more like making custard, and it is still a bit runny 24 hours later. Oh well, I slapped it on and she's taken it in. I don't have to eat it, thank goodness.

Woolies do Icing Mix- it is up on the top shelf, next to the almond icing, and is ready made up like fondant icing.

Go to an independent cake decorating shop. We have a great one in Geelong that stocks fondant icing in a myriad of colours. It's how I made my Kwaazi last year!
