Lot's of it.
Seriously!
First time we flew out for a holiday, DS was 14 months, pharmacist at LHR recommended it, I had never heard of it. On the way out it worked a treat, but on the return, he was a NIGHTMARE! (sometimes it can the 'opposite' effect) I think OH & I saw every minute tick over, the flight seemed to take AGES !! We used on the flight the following year also, but when we came over in May of this year, we didn't bother, as he was 4 1/2 & was happy to sit colouring/watching movies etc.
Just read all that back, & it sounds really bad - just to confirm, we only used it at his 'bed time' to make sure he had some sleep with all the excitement etc, we of course didn't drug him for the entire 24 hours !

Don't take Phenergan - my two were prescribed it for something and they both became hyper (on different occasions thankfully) I may as well have given them a large bottle of coke and a crate of smarties
Just take some colouring stuff, fav cuddly, etc. The cabin crew will give more stuff. There will be stuff on the tv's for kids or radio progs. Take carrot sticks or easy stuff they will eat in case they don't like the airline food and just chill. Make out it's no big deal and kids will be fine.

Try it before you go, you don't want to find out there allergic to it when 10km over the ocean

My best tip is dont worry about it! The thought of it is much worse than the actual experience.
We flew from Manchester to Brisbane in August with our 2 year old and he was fantastic. It was a very long flight as we went from Mcr to London, London to Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur to Sydney and Sydney to Brisbane - a total of just over 29 hours without any stops, just fuel stops.
We took a backpack of things for him to do - colouring, books, little cars etc but he loved the seat back TV and watched some of that. The cabin crew were lovely and chatted away to him, keeping him occupied and he was so interested in the experience that he was really good. He fell asleep when he needed to and, although we didnt get much sleep, at least we got to watch some TV or rest when he did.
We also travelled with my 16 year step-daughter and 6 yr old son and it was a great flight.
Good luck!

We did our trip (from Canada) with an 8 month old and a 3 year old. I wouldn't stress too much about, there's only so much you can do and whatever is going to happen will. Just remember you never have to see any of those people again!
We brought the usual stuff, colouring books, stickers, etc. Mostly my daughter watched lots of tv and slept when it was time. My son, the 8 month old, was also surprisingly good and slept most of the flight.
We've never tried giving them anything for the flight, but if that's something you're thinking about definitely try it before hand to see how your child reacts.

Just don't fly BA and you'll be fine!

On the Phenergan subject it makes 5% (approx) of kids hyperactive and the rest it knocks them out. We have to use it for our son who had ezcema its an antihistamine.
I used to have it for hay fever in the UK and if I take it now it knocks me out for 24 hours at a time......great for sleeping on long wet weekends, doesn't happen much in Queensland though!

We took two kids on a one hour flight. One screamed the place down the other kept kicking the seat in front
How attached are you to the kid, you could always leave him/her in the UK ans start fresh

When all is said and done it's only 24 hours out of a very long life. As Comet said you won't see these people again and six weeks later it will all be a very distant memory.

i've flown with children of all ages, both newborn and toddlers... and never had to drug them yet...
Have fun.
