It's a bit unnerving  and we are not in the midst of it. Good luck to anyone near the danger areas.

Bit concerned about the number of false alarms cropping up. Hope these are not intentional by time wasters or should I say potential life wasters.

I've just come back from what might have been a job.
The message came across scrambled and you go - in case it is a turnout.

Was only a dash up the road and back. Went past my neighbour inspecting his new fire fighting equipment - he's such a dag.

Most are "false alarm, good intent", but there are a few jokers. I like false alarms - saves having to get the hoses out only to have to put them away.

Firefighters are on high alert as afternoon winds threaten to fan blazes in Victoria's high-country and Gippsland region.

At least 170,000 hectares have been burnt out and the blazes are joining into larger firefronts.

The towns on high alert include Whitfield, Tolmie, Rose River and Cheshunt in the King Valley, and areas around Mount Buller and Jamieson. Authorities say fire conditions in the Mansfield area are on a knife's edge.

Dargo, Woods Point, Briagolong and Licola in Gippsland are also on high alert.

John Cook from the Benambra Country Fire Authority in Gippsland says communities east of the Darling-Cynthia fires are under threat.
ABC.

The figure of 170,000 hectares is difficult to comprehend, so I'll put it into perspective.

170,000 hectares = 420,079 acres.

That's the size of Worcestershire.

We have just been down at Williamstown for a birthday dinner and icecream and there was no sign of the city and only an outline of the Westgate Bridge visible.

Here is another of the same day, in all 28000 hectares burnt over a few days about 30km east of Perth.
The irony of this picture is that the man in the picture is my dad who came to Perth as a retirement present after spending 30 years in the Surrey Fire Brigade ! 'Come and see Kings Park, it's a great view of the city'...lol
