Default Entry to Schengen countries from May 2023

There are many countries that are not in the European Union (EU) whose citizens can enter the EU Schengen Zone without needing a visa. Specifically, there are currently 63 countries that are not in the EU but are visa-free - including the UK and Australia.
Citizens of these countries are allowed to go into countries in the Schengen Zone for business or travel purposes for up to 90 days. During these 90 days, these visitors are not allowed to work or study but can engage in business and tourism activities. In addition, recent security concerns with terrorism and the migrant crisis have called for better management of who is entering EU borders. The EU has continuously declared its goal of making travelling within its borders a more secure experience. To reduce procedures and wait times, as well as address the security concerns, the European Commission (EC) has come up with a solution – ETIAS.

The legal procedures to pass the ETIAS have started in 2016, and the system is expected to be fully operational in May 2023

------------------------------

So advance warning that from next May, if entering the Schengen Countries on a UK or Australian passport you will need to sort out an ETIAS first.

Whereas previously British tourists travelling to Spain where well regarded by locals as ambassadors of commerce and prodigious schollars.

Actually I was talking to a friend who lives in Germany about this as there is now a requirement to register with the government and get an identity card. He said though that Germany is so desperate for workers (recall Germany has a rapidly aging population and is already among the oldest countries in the world) they aren't actually enforcing travel rules to/from the UK. Pragmatism is winning, they are in no position to turn down workers/taxpayers.

Most European countries now require registration for residents.
My point in posting this here is just so that people like me, flying from Aus to visit Spain, know that they have to complete paperwork pre-arrival

Beware a gotcha that is ruining some UK passport holders trips to the EU: The EU do not accept the expiry date on a UK passport if it is beyond ten years from issue date.

Not sure if this can affect Australian passport holders - would only apply if the issue date and the expiry date are more than 10 years apart.
