English Breakfast
 

A debate is raging on the Canada forum (as much as anything in that forum can "rage") about British food and within it is a smaller discussion about what constitutes the perfect English breakfast, the most controversial element being the tomatoes.

So, your perfect English breakfast must contain.... what? For me it's: toast, eggs however, bacon (crunchy), sausage (obviously not in Australia where sausages are mostly inedible), mushrooms, fried potato, beans, and tomato (fresh if possible or canned is fine). Have I missed anything? Oh yes - a cup of tea of course.

Yes please if your cooking, otherwise If I'm cooking, then its Egg Bacon Sausage and beans and maybe some fried tomato though I'm not too fond of tomato... Oh and three or four slices of toast.... Dont forget the Lea and Perrins and Pepper..... Sundays only BTW. In the week Crumpet, when I can get it.

No mushrooms or fried potato. Either beans or canned tomatoes (not both).

Bit of black pudding. Cooked by Youngestchild and I'd be happy. For a once in a while treat anyway :)

The essentials are:

Eggs (fried with runny yolks, although scrambled is also acceptable)
Bacon
Sausage
Beans
Fried Bread


Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Black pudding, Hash Browns are optional extras.

No way! I miss UK sausages. Bangers & mash by way of a decent Cumberland, Lincolnshire or Braughing banger... onion gravy... pint of proper beer. Get in :)

As for the tomatoes with the English breakfast. I vote yes. Grilled.

in my part of Lancashire it was bacon, sausage, black pudding, eggs, mushrooms, tomato and fried bread.

Yup, I agree with this. Beans are the sticky point here in Sydney - Very few places do an decent all day breakfast (ADB) that comes with beans, and where they do, they are often wanky home made beans that just don't taste right.



I'll agree that the cheap UK bangers are equally disgusting as they are here, but the decent premium ones with some interesting flavours are excellent - Leek and apple were always my favourite. Nothing here really compares...

You can get excellent sausages in Britain for a reasonable price. We haven't found any here yet, but there's the central market which might be worth a shot. The ones in the supermarket are just filthy.

Disagree. Decent sausages are available in both countries but they are not common

Specialised butchers - yes, supermarkets - no. Both countries

British butcher and supermarket sausages are real meat plus about half of butcher's "rusk",

There are various laws concerning the meat content of sausages in the UK. The minimum meat content to be labelled Pork Sausages is 42% (30% for other types of meat sausages), although to be classed as meat, the Pork can contain 30% fat and 25% connective tissue. Often the cheapest supermarket pork sausages do not have the necessary meat content to be described as Pork Sausages and are simply labelled 'Sausages' or even 'Bangers' (an unregulated name). These typically contain MRM which under EU law can no longer be described as meat.[7][8]


in Australia they are real meat plus a good dose of heart, snouts, udders etc. Take your pick.

Excellent sausages available if you know where to get them.

Newcastle Upon Tyne;

Bacon, Sausage, eggs, Black Pud, fried bread, tinned tomatoes, baked beans. Black pud is becoming hard to find in Australia, here in a regional town of over 30,000 there's no pud in the supermarkets, have to go with blutwurst from a German smallgoods guy in town.

Heinz English Recipe baked beans are a good stab at the original. Aldi had them for a dollar a tin recently, bought heaps.

un-dyed smoked haddock on a bed of spinach with a soft poached egg and chive butter with brown bread mmmmmmm :thumbsup:

Toast and marmalade, with a cup of Earl Grey tea.

Can't eat fried stuff before 11 am.
