I'd gladly cycle to work but the 2 hours it would take me isn't justifiable. Nor is getting to work sweaty and smelly and having no where to shower. Using available public transport isn't any good either. I can drive to town in 20 minutes, do my shopping and take 20 minutes to get home. The bus takes an hour. The bus gets stopped at traffic lights, just like I would. It gets caught in any traffic, just like I would.
Aside from Toyota operating a recycling program for the NMH batteries, I think they have sufficient value to direct them into recycling outside of any program - Nickel's value helps drive this. I am not sure I have seen any data suggesting a Prius is less recyclable than a non-hybrid.

Come on, not the "Hummer is more environmentally friendly than a Prius" report - can you tell me that you honestly believe that a Hummer has a lower environmental impact, really? I have some shares in a condo you might be interested in

I think you'll find that this report has no basis in fact and uses a set of made-up data on average lifespans, mileages, energy use in production Vs use phase and so on that bear no resemblance to reality. The company that produced it provided no information on their assumptions, nor who had commissioned them to write it. Still, it did muddy the waters in many peoples minds in a "the science isn't settled" kind of way, so whoever paid for it got their monies-worth.

On the cycling/bus use, yep, there is always a whole host of reasons why people can't use them - I make the same lies to myself, but then realize they are just that and admit I don't use the bus because it is more hassle and full of the lower orders coughing their guts up and screaming at their children. Cycling is just hard work. Others campaign at work for showers and bike racks and look a lot fitter for it.
