I can say I am pretty well acclimatised here now.
In fact, I would not probably survive a winter in Ireland if I ever went back there.
Most of my mates here are Aussie born though and they struggle once it gets past the mid 30s.
It's especially a problem for our friends with kids as it means they have to cancel their picnic plans etc if it starts hitting the high 30s.
I recall Jan '03 when it once hit 44.1 degrees (the hottest on record since the 1939 45.6 record)but can never recall 45+ in the 5 years I have been here.
I would say that it rarely gets over 42 degrees in Melbourne and that maximum is usually only ever for a day or two.
Saying all that, I will stick to my original comment. Once the temp gets past 37 degrees (your body temperature), it is too hot.

Remember - the temp is recorded at Tullamarine where it is always a little cooler than the City....that's where it hit 47.
I've been here 3 years now...and like you say, have acclimatised too.

Don't you remember the summer before last when it reached 47C in the January ? I do...I was in Fitzroy that day ...and it stunk of burnt bricks.

Temps are recorded at stations all over the state btw, not just at Tulla.
In actual fact, weather station 86071 (the BOMs Melbourne regional office) is exactly just 1km from Fitzroy, so you would expect their readings to be pretty accurate for that area.
Jan 07 - highest recorded of 42.8 (Kerang)
http://www.bom.gov.au/announcements/...20070201.shtml
Jan 06 - highest recorded of 44.3 (Swan Hill)

Jan 05 - highest recorded of 42.4 (Horsham)

Maybe you were standing outside a building on fire though , hence the smell of burnt bricks ;-)
