I've heard "companionship". Surely only for the conversationally challenged.

I've heard "exercise". Must be real slobs that they need a dog to drag them around.

I've heard "guard". So many dogs are so thoroughly untrained that they bark at everything that moves. Like a car alarm.

Why do people have dogs?

I have 4 dogs and I find them better behaved than most kids.

But why do you have 'em, eh? (The dogs.)

Deformed by breeding to emphasise a narrow set of characteristics, mainly appearance. Locked in backyards starving them of company, forcing them to ensure mind bending boredom and indolence most of their lives and provide then with crappy food not fit for a dog. Required (else at the cost of their lives) to display pleasure at the appearance of their owner.

However, I love my pets in a different way entirely to that of my family. Having lost my Mum and nearly my husband - loving my animals is one thing, but I cannot and will not compare them to the same way as I love my family.

I dont have kids but would not hesitate to put Rocky in kennels if I wanted to go abroad, I wouldnt hesitate to destroy him if he attacked someone or if he was sick enough to need it.

I love them, but on a different and lower level to my family/husband.

Kid substitute? Can you imagine putting your kids in kennels when you go on holiday?

How come I hadn't thought of that one? :frown:

It's a bit like Karen Matthews and the fact she would tie a carrier bag around her littluns - to replace nappies. Damn she's clever - I kicked myself for not thinking of that one! :frown:

Business.

With virtual dogs being available in your internet connected computer, why do people want to own a physical dog?

People have kept dogs for countless centuries. It's ingrained in the human psyche.

Because it's unpalatable to do it yourself.

Might "ingrained in contemporary British culture" be more apt?

...but not Australian?. The houses near me seem to be almost 100% dog owners, with far too many of them just kicked out in the yard.

Nope. Greeks, Romans and Egyptians among others, all kept dogs as pets.
