Angry Dog Owners - Why?

I have noticed that many dog owners here (where I live SOR) have dogs that are not good with other dogs and will happily attack them.

I was on South Beach with Rocky (who was on the leash as we had only just arrived) and a large staffy came charging up to my dog, body language didnt look that friendly so I said to the owner 'Is your dog OK with other dogs?'

'No he isnt, you had better move your dog now' She replied matter of factly while her staffy who was off the leash appeared to be a in a position that if Rocky made a sudden movement then he would be attacked.

I told her in no uncertain terms that as my dog was on the leash and hers wasnt, and mine wasnt going to attack anything, then I suggest she puts hers on a leash toot sweet because if it did start on my dog then not only would I give it the kick of its life but I would call the ranger.

'No need to be like that' she snapped and called the dog away, who then went on and had a go at a weimeraner(sp?)

So I wonder what goes through the heads of dog owners that own a dog that they KNOW is not good with other dogs, yet they still let it off the leash where other dogs are, knowing full well that it could attack.

My counsellors mums dog was killed by an American bulldog in the park, Rockys vet told me that his own dog was attacked by a staffie - it just seems to be.

I dont understand why they dont put them on a lead when they know its badly behaved.

Poor ownership. It's the owners and not the dogs.

Not true. There are some breeds of dogs that are much more likely to attack than others and while the owners can have some control over that behaviour, its not total control.

If you are idiotic enough to own some of the pit bull breeds then you can expect that one day they will bite someone or attack somebodies else's dog. It is in the nature of the breed.

Didn't you have a run in with a Rottie a while back PP?

Dog owners always say "ah fine, won't hurt you" etc at which point some terrier dog starts running after you yapping at your heals!

We were at our local leash free area with a mates Gt Dane pup and a couple of Staffy's came in owner says yeah fine with other dogs at which point one of them went and had a go at the pup!

I wouldn't trust a Jack Russell as I now know two people who have had their upper lips disfigured by them jumping up and biting out of the blue.

As the OP says I think in some dogs they just have it in their nature or it could be that the dog knows you are slightly wary of it because of the breeds reputation - which is certainly the case with me! I'm really a cat person but we are considering getting a pooch (to stop the paunch ) next year so what fun I'll be having in the park with my cute fluffy when some bruiser comes along!

I guess owners think they know their dogs!

Is there any reason you have a dog? Livestock to round up? Property to guard?

In Victoria if a dog attacks another Dog I believe they are put straight on the under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act 1994 empowers Council to declare dogs to be 'dangerous' if these dogs have attacked or bitten and have caused death or serious injury to a person or animal.

They would then have to comply with the restrictions thereof.

Bad owners are terrible

Well Done PP but you know she will dismiss your feedback as being a stuck up Pom.

However bear in mind what she said could have been taken as Assault as she implied the threat of force if you did not move. the force being the dog.

They are known to be indefatigable big eaters and good guide dogs. What else are they good for? I've never seen one working sheep and they seem utterly useless at guarding property. I have seen them leave crap whereever.

I have a dog to primarily guard my house.

Why do you ask? My dog does not attack other dogs and is well socialised with other dogs.

My pup is not good with other dogs, she either tries to lick them to death, jump on them or, even worse, lie infront of them with her legs spread Therefore she is kept on a lead around others! Unfortunately other dogs like to use her as a chew toy , as she is a little ball of fluff!

My husband travels quite often for work leaving me and our 2 children home alone. We live in a relatively unpopulated area so I appreaciate the dog's presence.

While you may not see their use, my Golden Retriever would happily rip the throat out of anyone who dared try to hurt any of his pack. Not to mention he's great incentive to get out and walk regularly. He's certainly more worthwhile than some people I can think of.

Absolute bullshit in my opinion Just so happened i owned an American Pit Bull in the Uk (which regularly receive bad press rightly or wrongly ) for all of nearly 14 years (which is well over the odds for this breed apparently) and not once did she bite anyone or attack another dog in all those years (she did retaliate on odd occasions when picked upon by other dogs mind you )
