Default Does Australia have a future?

We have our visas and are now planning our move to Brisbane. However, my parents are not happy at all and are doing everything they can to put us off. In fact, they emailed me today saying that (and I quote) "It just seems so ironic that the main anti-Asian immigration politician in Australia has said that Australia has no future (immigration, taxation, regulation reasons, etc.) and wants to emigrate to the UK at a time when Australia is luring you!". Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the subject and could make me feel better?!

It's just a (unfair) ruse to get you to stay. Don't fall for it. It's your life and you should be able to choose wherever you want to live.

People (including parents) should be supportive of what you want to do with your life. Explain this to whoever does the opposite.

It's tough I know, but be strong and good luck.

I get this as well from friends (family aren't bothered haha!) saying that Oz is a cultural desert (yawn, so sick of hearing this), we'll NEVER come back (yep, once we land all flights to the UK will cease) and other such nonsensical reasons why we shouldn't go. It's your life, it's your risk/chance to take. If you're done your research and you're happy you can make a go of it then one random newspaper article out of context shouldn't put you off.

Good luck!

Outrageous! It really disappoints me when I hear parents making comments like this. After all they're undermining their childrens desire to make a better life for themselves and thats just selfish.

Tp use Pauline Hanson's laughable ruse to move to UK as an excuse for not coming here is ridiculously ignorant. Most of Aus are delighted the old witch os going. She's hardly credible.

Anyway apologies of being very blunt buts thats how I feel tonight!

If this is what you see as your future, then follow it.

They are talking about pauline hanson, and the main view of that is well articulated on a thread about her. General consensus is she's an idiot. THe lady is a chip shop owner, perhaps if the news story was "Shock : Racist Bigot Chip Shop owner emigrates from australia for better life" then it wouldnt resonate so loud.

its not that bad here, 20million people live here and some of them quite like it.

Only way to find out is to come out and see for yourself.

Australia has a better future than the UK. I think the UK will get themselves out of their current mess eventually but as for their long-term prospects? I can't see them improving unless they drastically restructure their economy to encourage manufacturing and exports.

Translation:

'It just seems slightly odd that some tin-pot chip shop owner who tried to win the racist vote in Australia and is now emigrating to the UK because she knows where she's not wanted, is saying it has no future.... Actually, let me think that through. No, wait, that's not odd at all.'

I really don't think your parents have a grasp of what Australia is or who Pauline Hanson is or how she's received here.

Well, Jack, your parents are clearly experts in this field or they would not have offered advice so I'd think carefully about the move.

Me, I'll just deal with the reality of day-to-day living and ignore whatever tittle-tattle has got the news-starved media in a flap.

Weather is getting cooler, humidity is down ... it's bloody marvellous

Who is this "main anti-Asian immigration politician"? Surely they don't mean Pauline Hanson? She's not even a politician anymore!
