It was -43C one night in February, our last winter there. One of our pipes in the house froze solid. Scraping icy windscreens, plugging in the car, shovelling the walk mid-blizzard because the snow is already 15cm deep...all a distant memory.

Agreed. I haven't even read it but the thread on here, elsewhere, and the reviews online convince me that it belongs at the bottom of the pool.

I do see your point.

Last year did a 5 week driving/amtrak tour of the USA, basically LA to chicago back to SF. The aussie partner had not seen much of the US and was totally blown away.

The diversity compared to a 5 week trip round or across OZ - mind boggling. Plus he totally enjoyed the trip costing a fraction of what it would in OZ. Saw his parents $90,000AU jayco caravan they had to go round OZ, old model there of course but it was $10,000 US.

Health care there is a challenge, but I feel no less safe e than in UK or Australia, had some lost moments too in areas of Chigago, St Louis and LA, but no worse than being lost in Sydney at 3 am on a friday night

Its much cheaper but wages can also be much less. I love the diversity of the climate there, hurtling down tornado alley has more thrill than the nullabor

Not many consider tornado alley a thrill, other than storm chasers. Glad you both enjoyed it .

Why thank you.

However I also tried sonic cheese sticks, and survived, probably equally dangerous but you just have to do it.

Good pont. I don't mind australia it is what it is. I'm married to an aussie girl and my kid is registered for dual nationality, but its lifestyle benefits are severely overplayed in my humble opinion. Its true as vast as Australia is you can see most points of interest in 6 months, whereas a trip to India could barely reveal the high points of one state in that time...

Bernieboy I seem to have got your goat!!! lol

I worked in the US for a few months and have travelled coast to coast overland and visited many times for holidays or work over the past 40 years.

I have never, ever wanted to live there. I see the main problems as healthcare, guns, religion, politics, TV and isolationism. They are always paranoid about something - communism, terrorism, socialism, anything un-American. I have many American friends, but all of them are well-travelled and well-educated and not what might be termed 'middle America'. I like California (but there are those earthquakes) and Arizona and parts of New England, but they are all full of Americans. Lastly it is a land of extremes in terms of wealth, well-being and weather.

Now that is living dangerous. Add in some deep fried snicker bars, donuts wrapped in bacon(and cooked in bacon grease), and a large meal of turducken and you may never escape.

Biscuits and gravy for breakfast That is the worst thing, ever.

Scones, covered in porridge with some cheap grey meat in it at for those yet to have that erm experience.

However I did discover the love of my life, Louisiana hot sauce. 10 bottles now down to the last one. addiction

Exactly. And that's why I don't live there either.

Have you never heard that about America being full of Americans before?
Common knowledge where I came from.
