Default Divers What's This? Ideas On A Postcard Please.

I inherited this from a mate who knew I was a scuba diver. It was in a bag of mixed bits & bobs that he bought at an auction. He just wanted the bag, I got all the other stuff inc this weird object. Stainless Steel with a lead weight at one end & the cord is elasticated.

I'll ask my diver friends, although from their Facebook pages I think they're all currently getting drunk at the F1.

Well the picture hasn't got scale, but I reckon it's a fitting to go on a boat to secure a dive tank during passage.

But why the lead weight?

Looks more like something you'd suspend under the boat, but then why would the other end be straight rather than hooked, if you were going to attach a rope to it. If there was a hook on the other end I'd guess it was for suspending spare air tanks at deco stops or for switching air tanks at depth. But with a straight end it looks a bit fishy. The straight end may fix into a rack of some kind of course.

Another possibility might be that it is a gadget to which you attach camera lights at the rod end and put the hooked end around your arm, or your tank depending on the scale of that photo. The lead weight would stop your light floating off (they have air in them), and may even allow you suspend the light in the water.

I reckon you'd use to it to mount a camera or lights on your back when diving.

Good ideas so far, the circle is way to small for a scuba cylinder BB [I'd thought of that so tried it for size]
Here's another pic with a stubbie to help scale it's size.

That'd be my guess too - the curved bit plus the bungee look about the right size for an air tank and the weight might be to balance the buoyancy. Just a guess.

It's obvious now. It's used for holding a longneck for consuming when you surface

Due to my apparent inability to copy an image properly, the only answer I've had so far is

No idea. Looks like you could hold something in the half circle, maybe a canister or cylinder and use the bendy bit of plastic to secure secure it in. Not sure what the long straight bit is for.

It would fit on a pony bottle.

Lol, I'd wondered if it was designed to hold a Styrofoam floatie with a flag attached to the long steel rod, sort of like a dive float you tow behind you. I'll try a crab pot float for size.

You worked out what it is yet?

I'm stumped but if I had to guess I'd say maybe something for hanging a deco bottle under a boat?

I can't think why you'd need something like that for a deco stop The deco stops I've used/seen were all simply a rope ladder type device or a trapeze like swing for multiple divers or simply a 5m length of rope with a cylinder carabinered to the end.
I took this today as the float seems to fit nicely however same principle why make an elaborate bungee system when the float has a hole right through lol. I'm still at a dead loss plenty of ideas though it would be good for someone to say "Hey! I made that for such & such a purpose"

Yeah me too
I've still got no idea, but will ask my mate who's a salty old sea dog, been diving forever (it's the sort of random thing he'd bundle together). He's up diving in Scapa at the mo, but will see if he's got any thoughts when he's back home in Cornwall and back on the net.
