Heading to Vanuatu, New Caledonia and New Zealand next month and thinking of getting one of those travel SIMs for cheap calls.

Overall I've looked at the rates on various sites and generally the two best options seems to be the supermarket ones from Woolies and Coles.

Are there any really good ones that I might have missed?

I used one that came with Covermore Travel Insurance when I was in UK earlier this year. Totally bad decision. I now have a cheapy 10 year old technology Samsung bought for 10quid and I used it for 2 months for the grand cost of 15 GBP, calls and texts. Can you not buy a local sim when you get to your destination?

What's it for? To call local numbers in Vanuatu or to call and receive from abroad. If the former then the local sim has to got be best.

If the latter, not sure which telco you are with but Optus and Vodafone do international plans. I'm with Optus and mine gets switched over when I go abroad. No idea what the cost is .... my company deals with it.

The wife is on Vodafone and she pays $5 a day for the same call, text and data costs she gets back home. For shorter trips it's great. For 2 week trips not so great as the $5 per day adds up.

$5 roaming applies in about 50 different countries...not Vanuatu or New Caledonia though. It covers most commonly visited places, although Canada stands out as weird one not to be on the list.

No local calls, just calling Sydney is all.

It's not a critical thing though, just hoping to make some cheap calls when in the places I mentioned... Getting a local SIM isn't up my alley for what is essentially just a quick stopover in each place.

Ah good catch.

Might be worth looking at internet calling. Skype and the like if its only a few calls.

I have Skype, but I need an internet connection for it on dry land. If getting decent wifi is as difficult there as it is here in Australia then I will be SOL...

Think I'll settle for either the Woolies or Coles card, just to stay in touch.

On a side note, did people manage to stock up on Skype credit during the recent 50% off sale?
