Dan Murphy's has got expensive

Anyone else notice how Dan Murphy's have got more expensive recently?

I never usually pay more than $42 or $43 for a carton of Coopers Green yet at the moment it's on "Offer" for $49 (normally $52).

My wife's normal tipple was $6.50 a bottle last month and this time only the shittest of shit bubbly was available at that price, my wife's was about $8.50.

Had I not walked out in disgust I calculated my bill would have been 18% more than the previous month.

I find them to be a mixed bag - cheap on some things, not on others. They will price match though. Their prices on French champagne are usually very good, but the Leeuwin wine I bought recently was much cheaper in Liquorland.

Boozle is good to check for the best prices for beer and spirits

I'm not sure if its some tax change (there was one in Feb, but not to the degree of the price rise), or some common boost in the core prices, but I've noticed the price of beer and wine going up recently. Significantly.

When you compare prices with the UK, you find that for beers which here are considered 'international', the price in the UK is much less ($3.58 vs $5.17) - despite the significant tax. However, the local brews are MORE expensive than the import, which just isn't justified by quality.

I'm thinking its another example of the local manufacturers failing to address their overpricing, and instead reacting to falling sales with even high prices to try to keep profits up.

Funny, but also useful to track beer prices. You need to come on here next year at the same time with the same complaint. Look at what you were complaining about in 2010!

Complaining about the same things, in the same way, just with the numbers changed

Its interesting to note, I think, that things have got reversed.

In general the domestic swill should be cheapest, then the domestic premium, then the international premium (which should be most expensive by virtue of being both the best stuff, and having having to be shipped half way round the world).

However, if you look now its the international beers that are cheaper than the domestic premium, and even the domestic swill. In essence once the price here goes too stupid, its cheaper to import and sell the beers, rather than brew here - pegging the prices of these named beers.

As it is, its the domestic beers that are spiking in price, as there is no international equivalence to keep them even slightly sensible - people are just buying the names they know. Its better to buy imports at the moment, and cheaper.

BTW as a rough benchmark, from the above international comparison, the price of international type beers should be ~$30, and the domestic swill should be cheaper still. That's how far the brewers/distributors/taxation system has got out of whack.
