Creative ideas with celery....anyone!

Ok so being always on a budget, at the mo veges are a bit pricey, even in Aldi. However at the moment celery is a bargin, $1.50 for a massive bunch. So apart from putting it in salads and the occasional stew (even though its not really stew weather!), I am at a bit of a loss as to how to make good use of it.

Anyone any ideas!!!

For kids, I've seen the end of celery cut up into thin strips to resemble a paint brush, and then dips (in various colours) to look like paint.

Not so useful, if you are above, say 4......

Juice it, with cucumber, carrot, apples, etc....

Other than that, go out into the street and start pointing sticks of celery at people and pouting at them with a crazed look in your eye, while doing a silly walk.
This will result in you being sectioned and sent to a nice hospital somewhere, where they will serve decent food....

take each piece, clean then cut into strips lengthways. Take the strips and then cut them across 'til you have fairly finely cut celery and then season.
Take the chopping board and with a scraping motion, use the back of the knife to scrape the nasty stuff into the bin and to finish, eat some proper food

Celery is merely a transport system for other foods.

Peanut butter down the middle... or tuna mayo... Anything salty will do it.

If you eat a lot of it, your tongue will numb up. :D

I had a tip to chop it up and freeze it. You can then add it to stews, soups and bolognaise type sauces. It doesnt matter that its squishy when its defrosted because it would be after cooking anyway. I now do this with carrots etc too. I just chop up all my leftover when they are looking abit poorly and pop them in the freezer. Then when I am cooking, it saves me ages cause I dont need to chop anything:thumbup:

OMG I am turning into my mother

Celery soup works well and uses up the stalk and leaves. Chop up an onion, stock, lots of black pepper and cream (or low fat alterantive) and hey presto! easy, healthy and tasty.

You could use it as miniature guttering to drain a Bonsai garden.

Thats a good tip, ta!

Look I know its a bit of a crappy vegetable, but i feel compelled to find a good use for it, other than smothering it with very fattening dips, not good for the waistline. Especially when its $1.50 a bunch and broc and cauli are about $4 ea.

Chelsea fans have ideas about what to do with celery:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaToM-5PsUI

Warning - it has rude words and is not suitable for work.

Otherwise, celery soup is very nice or use it as a base for stews, stocks, ragu etc.

Carefully arranged celery around your washing-up bowl will make a nice water adventure park for mice.

The best thing I can think of for celery is to use it in a caeser cocktail however, I dont think you can get all the stuff to make it in oz.
It's vodka, clamato drink (mott's brand tomato juice with clam broth), lemon juice around the top of the glass then dipped into celery salt, top off with a stick of celery heart.
Yummy drink.......
Canadian I think............

 Love it. I do like celery though. I'm all for juicing too - carrots. beets, ginger and celery.

The reason it's so cheap is because it's rubbish and has no nutritional value what so ever. The Australians (from what I've seen) seem to have an obsession of the stuff and they put it in everything and it's rank  Raw with some salt it's ok or dipping it in some dips is ok too. Cooked is foul and should be avoided at all costs. I'm surprised they haven't come up with a meal of beetroot and celery, that would truly finish me off.

Next......:D

So you won't be trying the Liver Flush juice I suggested above, then? :D

I believe that colonel Von Strom in Allo Allo had an unorthodox use for celery when taking the waitresses upstairs for extracurricular activities. Is this what you were wanting?

Re: Creative ideas with celery....anyone!

Italians use a lot of celery as mentioned before in soups and bolognese sauce.

A mixture of finely chopped carrot, onion and celery lightly fried in olive oil is the base starting point for most soups and sauces. I think the celery is there more for the flavour it gives than anything else.

Anytime I make minestrone or bolognese sauce I always make the biggest pan full and then freeze.

It's also quite nice lightly boiled to make it go a bit softer - left to cool and then mixed up with a bit of onion and cooked chicken pieces and mayo or some other salad dressing. A bit like potatoe salad but with celery and chicken and whatever else one wants to add.

And thats the thing. <Dons white lab coat and thick glasses> Not trying to sound toooo technical, but celery has a negative calorific value, which means that the body spends more energy digesting it than is gained from it. So, you can eat yourself thin!

On a more cullinary tract, its used mainly in English cooking for making stocks. Put bones from roasts (chicken, lamb, beef, etc) in a big pan with celery, carrots, onion, top with water, bring to boil and simmer for a few hours. Stock base which can then be used for gravy/soups/stews/etc.

Not much help when its 45 degrees though :D

I'd pay money to see someone do that. Do you prepare them yourself?

Would that be a nut cutlet?

Okay. Get some cream cheese (i.e Philadelphia). Spread it in the middle of the stick and start munching.

If you're really adventurous spread some sweet chilli sauce on top.

Presumably only if you eat nothing else but half a ton of the crappy thing? Using it for stock is fine, I do that but I do not want to see it in chunks in meal, it's just a filler and a cheap and nasty one at that.:D

I don't agree but depends what you cook it with. Chopped up small with chopped onions and chopped green bell peppers (sweet peppers) is the base for many cajun dishes - IMHO a very fine cuisine.

I agree, we often have it in a stir fry - too often people overcook and loose the flavour.

Just be carefull eating it as it is a well known a aphrodisiac.
Especially raw or just blanched.

Chinese celery salad:

Chop some celery into 2-3cm pieces, blanch it, rinse with cold water.

Get a cup of raw peanuts and boil them until soft, strain and rinse.

Mix celery and peanuts, a dash of soy souce, sprinkle of chilli and a few drops of sezamy oil.

Mix and serve.
