Default Childhood play things

Personally, I liked a troll, a Cindy and some jacks.

Also, demonstrating early signs of questionable intellect by cantering around the garden jumping over a set course of obstacles in the deluded certainty I was giving the impression of being on a horse.

What did you like to do when you were a kid?

We played with the washing line which was a piece of rope.We used it to play skipping with half the kids on our street. It was also used to tie around the electricity pole and used as a swing. It was used to play tug of war.Sometimes my mother used it to hang the washing on.

I hated trolls, but had a gonk. I too was a horse jumping over fences made of bins and mum's pea sticks with my best friend. I envied one of my friends who had a Barbie with bendy legs, and made lots of stuff out of Lego.

I think it was called French skipping. Tie a piece of rope around your ankle with a ball on the end and spin it round jumping over it.. Also another one - put a ball in the end of a stocking and stand against a wall whilst hitting the ball over our head and between your legs!!

Oh, I'd forgotten about that one.....what about the one where you had a length of elastic and two people stood with it round their ankles and you jumped in and out and made patterns with it, then it went up to their knees, hips and waist. If you couldn't jump it you had to be one of the ends and they got a go.

Punting, which involved the utilisation of an old door and a broomstick on the Rochdale canal.
Shooting rats on the tip.
Shooting at each other with air rifles.
Lighting fires.
Fishing condoms out of the brook whilst avoiding the jobbies from the sewage outlet.
We used to see how many we could hang off a stick. If we found one that was full and tied off we would splat it underfoot.

Another game was British bulldog 1, 2, 3. We used a metal ball and boy did that hurt if it got you!!

We did that game with the rope around your ankle but didn't call it French skipping. When you had two skipping ropes with two people either end turning them and a third person jumped in the middle,we called that French skipping.

Used to play this one all the time. Called it French elastic or something. We also used to play cats cradle, making shapes and things with string round your fingers. Then there was always imaginative play - we used to play Charlie's Angels. (I was Sabrina)

I was pretty crap at cats cradle, but gave it a shot.

Also pretty crap at conkers, but liked collecting them anyway.

Also liked finding treasures in a stream which ran though our property. Tadpoles, tiny pieces of broken china, pretty pebbles.

It beat a stupid computer anyday.

No trolls, but was a Cindy girl too, and had a Cindy horse

Me too, and a few years later, got to do the real thing

I hated Barbie with a passion and still do. Refuse to let DD have one

Ditto. Was like giant version of Cat's Cradle. Think my mum must have spent a fortune on bl00min' elastic

Used to spend hours exploring the local woods, picking blackberries etc, when we lived outside Pompey. Then we moved to deepest, darkest Lincolnshire when I was 6. Used to collect caterpillars and would build dens in the ditch next to the driveway using blankets and my dad's scaffolding boards Had to make my own entertainment as my nearest friends were miles away

My sister hung me on the washing line one of those rope ones with the bit of Y shaped tree as a prop. Anyway I fell off and ended up with 2 black eyes from landing on my head.

Those were the days none of this PC crap and health and safety then.

Used to cycle miles out to the various white horses with my friend Sarah, and picnic on lettuce and rhubarb chutney sandwiches and whatever fruit we could find.

Sometimes we'd play in the hay rick, but it would take forever to get the bits out of our woolly jumpers and long hair.
