There is no requirement to provide the PD as part of the spectacle prescription in the UK, just the power of the corrective lenses prescribed and the BVD if those lenses are over -4.00 or +4.00.

I went into the opticians where I had my eyes tested about a year ago, and asked for a copy of my perscription. Got it, no questions asked, all perscription details on it, including PD. I have just ordered some glasses and sunglasses from the Googles4u website (thanks Ozzidoc), $70 in total. A lot better than the $500 plus I paid at opticians last year!

I just hope they are ok when I get them, but at that price its worth a try, and free postage and packing too!!!!

Our optician gave us the specs and contact prescriptions no bother as well. Just didn't order anything as very little change.

I don't know if the Oz prescriptions follow the US or UK format but bear in mind they are different! If a UK prescription is made up by a US firm without them knowing it might give very strange results!

I received my glasses today. The were sent registered mail from Pakistan! They are great, look good and I can see perfectly with them. They also came with good quality hard cases. I dont even need to have the fit adjusted.

I am very happy and will be ordering all my glasses from there in future.

Thanks again Ozzidoc for the link.

I had my eyes tested today and came home and ordered a pair of glasses from Goggles4u. The only thing that I am a bit worried about is that my glasses often have to be altered a bit because they always seem to be a bit lopsided. I think I must have wonky ears!!!
I will let you know how I get on when they arrive.

Having been a fitter of glasses in my previous life I can tell you that for the most part of prescriptions below -/+3.50 your PD is not always needed, but above that getting the lenses in the optimum centre of the glasses for your eyes is important. If you are sensitive to slight changes in your prescription not having the correct PD will be noticeably. I am assuming that online providers of glasses will just be taking the centre of the glass frame to the PD. If you have a high prescription its worth trying glasses of the similar size in an opticians and asking them to tell you what the PD is.

You cant take it yourself, its too difficult. You need to have someone with an accurate measuring ruler to take it for you.

Also, some countries do write down their prescriptions differently but there is a simple formula that all opticians have been taught to transpose it to the way which works for their company. You shouldn't have any probs getting a copy of your prescription, although I know of a big firm in the UK who makes it difficult to give them out.

That lopsided wonky bit always happens when you sit on your glasses or smash into something or your dog or child nuts you. Gentle twist often does the trick and opticians always seem to just warm then flex them, suppose it depends what they are made of.

The centre of vision thing is a problem but then suppose with the cheap specs try one pair and if you've blown your money tough but if they work you are on a winner.

Absolutely. I had a couple of pairs of varifocals made to the same prescription a couple of years ago: one in the UK and one in the States at a discount house (Sam's, in fact).

The UK ones were over twice the price - but not nearly as good. With quite a bit of astigmatism, I have to move my head sideways to get proper focus at different distances as well as look though a different "level". The US ones are clear all the way across. Don't ask me why the difference - but it is quite dramatic!
