Default Calling All Teachers

In the UK I’m employed by a college where I teach business admin and assess NVQ’s (16 years old plus) I have my stage 1 and 2 teaching qualifications and have just completed my certificate in education. I’ve been trying to find out what are the requirements for teaching in colleges in Oz but keep going in circles. Can anybody help????

I think to be able to teach in TAFEs you have to have the certificate IV in training and assessment. Have a look at some of the TAFE websites as some offer this course and others don't. It is not a long course I don't think

Think you need a degree and PGCE to get into Australia as a Teacher. Ask on immigration part of BE plenty of agents in there who will guide you!

If you want to teach in the TAFE system here in Queensland all you need is the cert IV in training and assessment and also you are supposed to have industry experience, but I know someone who left TAFE at 19 with a diploma and started teaching the subject at a different TAFE whilst studying for his cert IV in training and assessment. I have clarified this today with the teachers at TAFE.

Sorry you missed my point, to get in as a Teacher generally you need degree and PGCE, my mum used to teach in a college in UK and would probably have gained employment in Australia with same qualifications but she could not pass skills assessment with them, so could not gain entry to Australia that way.

Thanks for getting back to me, really helpful. I have been teaching in colleges for nearly 4 years, and have 16 years experience of the business/admin industry - so hopefully I may be able to secure a job whilst studying the Cert IV in training and assessment - do you have a contact number for a local TAFE where I can call to make enquiries? I will be moving to Brisbane on 12 July 2006.

Thanks.

You need to decide which sector you wish to teach in? Child care, primary, high school, TAFE/VET, university or English as a Foreign language.

Which state?

TAFE/VET requrement has been upgraded, not dramatically just a few more subjects, primary requires full teaching bachelors degree and high school a Dip Ed. = PGCE

You could get full recognition of your previous study but not sure if business teaching at TAFE level would be enough.....you may need to look at a specialisation at TAFE or high school level, or regional posting....

Another pathway is study firstly from home off campus, or in Oz (where you can work also), to ensure qualifications are recognised i.e. getting an Oz qualification and look at potential sponsorship/employment.

Cheers Andrew M.Ed.

Hi Andrew
Thanks for the reply - do you recommend studying Certificate IV in Training & Assessment? To help further my chances of securing employment at a college? As I mostly teach vocational qualifications.
Thanks, Kate

Hello,

From UK you could get Cert IV WPA online or book based (plus get some extra points for having an Oz qualification) www.webtrain.com.au I will learn more from friend in Oz who does same and can explain the upgraded qualification more, and who has available for international study online (most programs are delivered in OZ for Australians in industry etc.)

Here is link to upgraded package description:

http://www.ntis.gov.au/Default.aspx?...ation/TAA50104

Not sure what is avilable online as package is newish. Another thing is that TAFE/VET business teaching is not a MODL so if you wished to look at similar career for PR you would perhaps need to look regional

or

"Accounting" is MODL, study accounting, get RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning), get recognised as TAFE teacher in meantime and work during accounting study?

If interested for direct PR regional e.g. NT, SA, TAS, country Victoria etc. see:

Cheers,

Andrew

Thumbs up Re: Calling All Teachers

Hi,

See this link for competencies for the new Cert IV TAA http://www.webtrain.com.au/wta.html

Webtrain is a consortium of TAFE and private providers (RTO) with several doing the TAA, I have old Cert and will upgrade to new....

Useful to do, you can get Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and extra points as an Oz qualification for migration applications.

I know the guy running Webtrain and will ask him which RTO to use, though one of them ABRA could be easiest.

Cheers Andrew
