I think that result would be better if I got shot of my 6 year old modem!

Thats decent enough. Makes me laugh when people boast about download rates, like 50-80mb..

You can only open a web page so fast!

Unless they download illegal films etc etc..

Or Dodo. They are cheaper still I think...

I would never even consider using Dodo - look at this review site for an idea why.

TGP don't do much better either - I moved from them to Internode, and have had a much more stable connection.

If you only use the Internet for looking at web pages on your computer, then it's probably all the same to you but it's not like "downloading illegal films" is the only other use. I'm not particularly geeky and I have a "landline" that's VoiP, got a digital radio for listening to Radio 4, got a smartphone that's constantly sending/receiving data and I use Skype and watch Telly (perfectly legally) on the laptop occasionally. I doubt that is very unusual around here.

Having a decent connection is the difference between being able to do a couple of those things simultaneously and having to tell someone else they have to stop chatting to their family because I want to watch tv, for example.

was with tpg for a couple of years and highly regarded them

thing is with tpg if something goes wrong you are buggered .... now i hate them and will NEVER use them ever again .... they have no idea of how to treat a customer and it becomes an absolute pain in the ass after numerous phone calls to even get them to understand what they have done wrong

moved to internode and i have to say their customer services team are probably the best i have ever dealt with

Yes the geeks choice of ISP.

Tends to be between Internode and iinet for the geeks, though what if any changes happen in the future now iinet owns Internode we'll have to wait and see.

Whats VoIP and a nodeline?

If you want to use voice over ip. Node line is where they provide a traditional phone line.

Skype is a form of VoIP.

I think the above poster is correct but in this context, more specifically, I think t refers to Internode's NodePhone. I have it. Instead f having a landline through Telstra, you have a phone number through Internode. You have a normal physical house phone but it plugs into your router-modem instead of the wall. you don't need to have the computer on and you use the phone just like any normal landline house phone. The dialing code is a normal dialing code for your state.

Upsides: much, much cheaper if you dont use a landline a huge amount - the cheapest option with Internode has no monthly fee and the national and international rates and v competitive. Looks and works just like a normal phone.

Downsides: I would say the quality is not quite as great as a normal landline. It's perfectly good but not perfect (for us). If your Internet is out then your phone is out (eg in power cuts). If your speed is poor, your quality will be bad.

I never use the landline and live in the middle of a city, so the downsides were minor and the upsides much bigger. I doubt I would have a "landline" at all if it weren't free: we get unlimited calls on mobile for $39 a month so why would I pay a similar amount to Telstra for a phone I never use. Your position mit be different , of course!
