It's the "ground zero" of global money laundering.

More like the vampire that sucked the blood out of the economy.

British manufacturing was f**ked long before Thatcher came to power. Decades of socialist policies saw to that.

Hmm, let's just look at that graph again ....

Yep, you can see how f**ked it was by that solid upward path from 50s through to the end of the 70s, interrupted only by the decade of the 80s which pulled manufacturing output back to 60s levels and cut the heart out of heavy industry in particular, replacing it with an unfettered city financial 'industry' that ..... oh ....

So rather than bail out industry and support it in modernising to a world beating level, we end up bailing out a bunch of red braces financial gamblers, none of whom seem to have faced a mounted police charge for near bankrupting everyone. Strange that.

If it were you or I we would be going to prison for the rest of our lives.

It's outrageous just how corrupt the financial sector has become. I mean, look at Corzine and how he got away with stealing all his customer's money.

All I see is a dip in the very early 80's where they went from being priced out the markets due to the Unions, and then a strong rebuild afterwards.

It was bigger when she finished being PM than when she started.

It's bigger now, than it was then.

"decimated" indeed. But don't let facts get in the way of a good rant.

You see a continuation of growth, and claim improvement in competitiveness. I see a big and sustained dip in manufacturing leading to an inflection point in the growth trend of the country and refer back to what thatcher's tender ministrations meant on the ground for industry - something that's never been recovered.

I guess you are more a 'cut it off and it might grow back' kind of person, whilst I'm more a 'repair and medicate it so you can keep both legs'....

Oh, and since decimate means "remove one in ten" and thatcher cut manufacturing output from ~84 to ~72 on your graph (~14%) I feel the phrase was earned.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimation_(Roman_army)

Current usage of the word

The word decimation is often used to refer to an extreme reduction in the number of a population or force, much greater than the one tenth defined by the "deci" root.

Sharp, hard working, industrious, quit witted, unscrupulous, immoral, connected, highly educated, rich will prosper all others will be chaff and will have to work there arse off to keep there and there families heads above water.
