They prefer wooden houses with tin roofs so there isn't much call for those trades.

There's still work about here on the Sunshine Coast, it's slowed down a fair bit in the last year from the boom time a couple of years back. If your O/H is content to work for someone else he could get a start either as a brickie or a solid plasterer. Rates of pay aren't great $622 is the award rate for both trades. As work becomes more scarce those paying above award rates will become fewer. Fronting up on sites is the best way I've found to get a start. Also dropping into the pubs between 3-5 in the afternoon is good as the tradies here tend to go for a quick after work beer. He'll soon find a few contacts & get a start.

If he wants to work and be self employed he needs to apply for a licence from the QBSA, they usually require a positive TRA & will only grant a licence as a brickie or a plasterer it's impossible to get a licence for both from the off as you need sufficient immediate work experience in the chosen trade. Take a look at their website QBSA

Beginning of Feb is a bad time as things are still not running at full steam after the Christmas Hols, the last few years we've had very little work until mid Feb from the middle of Dec. A lot of companies have about six weeks at Christmas as it's extremely hot, also the kids are off school for that time period. The mad rush before Christmas usually sees us through cash wise though. Feb will be like a baptism by fire for a plasterer or a brickie, it's the hottest month here and to be outside in the heat is exhausting. Top priority is a large water cooler, Deb & I usually drink at least 4 litres each during the summer. The intense heat is only for a few weeks so don't panic, by April it's nice & remains so for a lot longer than than the brief intense Summer heat.

By the time you've had a couple of weeks to sort out rentals, cars etc. Work should have reached full speed again.
Good luck with your move

Hi Cresta,
Is the award wage mentioned above apply to decorators ?
Would you know if there's still plenty of work in the townsville region.
Any info most appreciated .

Award wages can be found here http://www.wageline.qld.gov.au/awardsonline/index.html
As for work in Townsville there are a few posters from that area Rab I think is one. It would probably be better to post a specific Townsville question to catch their eye
