Bowral is a quiet (relative to Kings Cross, anyway) area, very handily placed for both Sydney and Canberra. It is probably one of the most "English" places in Australia in feel. There are some five golf courses within 10 minutes drive, shopping at Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale.

My sister lives in Robertson. It is indeed damp, not nearly as up its own arse as Bowral though. 
Didn't you once try and convince me that Bowral was the Southern Highlands equivalent of the Bronx? That no self-respecting expat retiree would dare stroll down the high street after 8:00pm for fear of being mugged? Or did I dream it?

You've got that spot on The Kangaroo valley pies were orrible, have you tried the pie shop in Thirlmere?? bloody andsome

Put it like this then: by day, civilised (For Australia). Late at night, esp. Friday and Saturday: not quite Kings Cross, but us oldies have had our Ovaltine and are tucked up nice and warm and safe from the Glasgow Kiss. Each to his own.
