Had a little girl called Ocea (pronounced O'sher) at my pre school. Her brother was something like Aerius- can't remember exactly.

Yeah thats just lazy. I went out with a girl called Tammy a couple of years ago for a short time. I remembering asking her what its short for, Tasmyn, Tamara, ..? She said it's not short for anything.

I heard of one childs name that I suspect is just an urban myth:

"Xtian"

(pronounced 'Christian')

Give me a few hours and I'll be able to confirm this urban myth is indeed a true story, we've a boy at school similar but I can't think what it actually is supposed to be, I'll have to ask the kids when they get home from school.

Names are quite, quite a mystery to me over here. We probably have 50% normal and 50% just plain strange at our school now

These names or variants there of seem to appear on threads like this a lot. I personally think it is an urban myth but I am going to put them up before anyone else does.
T_a (Tdasha) N_a (Ndasha) etc

Something with extra "x"s and "y"s in it. Jaxxson. Maddoxx. I recently heard someone say she was going to name her daughter Londynn Grey.

Agreed.. and perhaps the pick was poor to start with. I rejected names if they made my kids sound like anyone I didn't like the look of! I can't work out the 'creative' behind it all.
Do they read celebrity magazines, does the family suggest it?

It's actually one of the only things that has me stumped. Many other things I can account for...

My girls have unusual names, (due to matriarchial heritage) but at least they are spelt correctly, and in fact they come out normal in the grand scheme of things.

Not one normal name, even perhaps if you spelt them correctly! Except perhaps Jarrod sounds normal - for a bogan maybe.

Have to admit, most of ours on our list(s) squeeze past.

This has come up before but I'll chuck it in for good measure.

CHLORINE - I kid you not. They probably don't use any cleaning materials so wouldn't know the connection.

I'd agree with you completely but this mob (local) actually do spell it chlorine. It would have been nice to see Chloreen though.

Don't mind Chloe!

Let's be honest here folks - what's normal?

Just because a name is not in the Old/New Testament...

I mean we might get Jacob, Isiah, Esekiel...(sic)

And there are names which reek of the early 20th c....

I wonder if people give their children unusual names because they want to give something different, or because they don't know how to spell it.

Most of these names are no weirder then names given to English children that are virtually unheard of in Australia like : Edmund, Abigail, Florence, Eustace, Fanny ect.

Spot on - either f**ked-up middle-class names like Pandora, Prussia or Rupert, or Chavtastic names like Dwayne, Brooklyn or Chardonnay.

A subjest for another thread.

My mother's former neighbors back in Canada named all three of their kids after car models. They were quite proud about it.

T_a (Tdasha) N_a (Ndasha) etc

I have seen a variant of this through my work: L - asha (Ladasha). Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes

A lady I once knew called her youngest son Timo (pronounced Teemo). At the time, I thought it sounded like a good name for a puppy, but I didn't tell her that.

I can also confirm that I've met a child through my work who was (seriously) called La-a. I had no idea how to pronounce it but it turned out it was pronounced 'Luh dasha'

Hate to spoil to the fun but it's not a country thing, it's a 21st century thing.

Actually edit that. It's a since people existed thing but more obvious in the 21st century. 50 years ago, many of the common name now were unheard of. Also, who decides if the spelling is wrong or not? Who has decided that Jaxxon is incorrect just because it's not Jackson?
