There really is very little in the way of Australian comedy that would come close to making the list. I remember people raving about the show where the young bloke played a schoolgirl in a High School, what embarrassing crap. I cant recall the name of the show, I watched half of one episode and that was too much.

What I noticed was a lot of shows from the 1980s and before, the majority of which are just not funny or relevant today.

Been trying to remember the name of a comedy show... just came to me: Absolutely.
A bit of a curates egg, but with some very funny bits. "Stoneybridge"- a series of sketches in the show where the local village council meets to decide things. Now I have to say "Stoneybridge" in a Scottish accent whenever I see a stone bridge!! (Yes, I am sad!)

And there was a show done by women - Smack the Pony - I think, which had some good bits.

Oh, and Malcolm in the Middle. Mostly because I kind of channel Lois.
And Scrubs. Because everyone has a JD in their lives. (If they don't, they should get one)

Mind you, I watch all kinds of rubbish, so what would I know :D

Yes Scrubs & St. Elsewhere.

If you look at what the yanks think are the best comedy shows, its full of what I'd consider embarrassing pap (eg Modern Family). Now maybe you could say they don't know better and haven't been exposed to most of the good stuff - however - if you look at what the Australians' tend to say is top comedy its ALSO full of the same American pap - and they do have the opportunity to see British stuff.

I just think American shows are too manufactured. Reflects their 'classless' and suburban society.

I don't think British comedy is funny now. If you look at it, the best stuff was in the 60s and 70s, or 80s and poked fun at a particular type of British person or society. The humour does not travel because the minutae of British life does not travel that well whether it is Ab Fab, Dad's Army. if you think about it, most classic British comedy is based on the concept of the 'Little Englander' and the stuff they get up to in their everyday lives.

I haven't seen Australian comedy as such. I do find Australian standup funny. There are some good comedians out there.

Black Books is a good one that I missed off the original list, and One foot in the grave was good.

America and Australia as a rule just don't do comedy very well. Faiser was an exception and I struggle to think of an Australina sit com that I like

Just remembered - there was a series many moons ago called IIRC Drop the dead donkey - very funny send-up of the TV news gathering system.

Most of the UK comedy (with some notable exceptions) from before the '80s is shit

Jonah behave yourself! Chris Lilley is fab.

There were some good ABC comedies in the 80's and 90's - the guys from Comedy Company and Working Dog did that "The Late Show" which was an absolute hoot - Mick Malloy is my kinda man.

Shameless has had me in stitches at times.

In the 70's in Australia is was all Paul Hogan, Dave Allen and Benny Hill.

He is hilarious. Angry Boys is also genius.

Australia doesn't really seem to do many sit-coms. The only other one I can even think of (good or bad) is Kath and Kim.

Its strange as they do have quite a lot of very funny comedians, I've seen a lot of great stand-up here, and also some panel shows like good news week were excellent.

Modern Family is much, much smarter than stuff like Dads Army and Porridge.

I agree. Those old UK shows are pants. There is loads of great US comedy. Arrested Development is another that springs to mind
