Well when you don't have tv connected, books and movies are the main form of entertainment in the house. Especially during the daylight hours during summer holidays in Dubai.

That's why everyone has maids in Dubai, except me.
Why would anyone need 6 bathrooms? |

It's ridiculous, the four bedrooms and the maids room are ensuited and then there's an extra guest bathroom. We'll be moving villas soon and I want one with less bathrooms - the only time it's good is when visitors stay and they can have their own privacy.
Do most people have maids? It must be like living in a hotel! Do you like Dubai Kim? It must be so different to Aus! |

Do most people have maids? It must be like living in a hotel! Do you like Dubai Kim? It must be so different to Aus! There is a glamorous aspect to Dubai, large villas, large shopping complexes, large hotels. But really the place is a dusty old desert with beautiful buildings. But the buildings have really bad standards and fall down after 10 years or so. Nail salons, shopping and brunches are really not my thing, so I prefer getting out of the Dubai city. Things take a long time to process which is very frustrating and the laws change with every person you're involved with - but it's understandable - Dubai was an ancient civilisation living in the desert just 30 years ago. The education here is pretty sub-standard yet you pay more than you would in one of the most expensive private schools in Australia. Any kind of extra-curricular activities are not that crash hot. A lot of kids are spoilt and can't be bothered sticking to one thing long enough to get good at it. We're not unhappy here. It's been a good experience culturally. My youngest daughter has just finished grade 1 and in her class of 18, there were 14 nationalities. I won't regret having come here for the experience, but I wouldn't want to live here forever. |

Most people to have maids, either in a full time (live-in) or part time capacity. A full time live in maid costs about 500-700AUD a month - some get less some more, but that's about the average. I just don't feel comfortable with having a non-family member living in the house and being entrusted to care for my kids.

I am a firm believer that it is only positive for kids to experience other cultures. Despite some bad experiences, ie being bullied for being white, my eldest son really gained from our previous venture! |
