Beer Economy

Beer Economy
Having noticed the sterling to AUD exchange rate is now 1.83, I've been briefly lamenting over the comparative cost of beer:
O'Reillys on South Bank, Melbourne charge $7.50 for a pint of Guinness (which is pretty good price for Melbourne, some charge $8 or $8.50) - $7.50 translates to 4.10 GBP a pint!
The Espy in St.Kilda charge $4.50 for a pot of VB - that's 2.46 GBP for roughly half a pint of bog standard local beer! Thats five quid a pint
OK, the Espy charge crazy prices, but most pubs sell a pot for $3.80 or so, which is still over 2 pounds for a half pint.
If only Wetherspoons would set up in Oz.....

Beer Economy
So how many beers do you get to the average wage ?
Based on May 2009 Full Time Adult total earnings in Australia...
437 pints of James Boag Premium Lager in bottles at the bottle shop.

Re: Beer Economy
Personally, when I was doing my usual job, I got paid roughly the same here as in the UK (at a $2 exchange rate), and I could buy alot more beer at my local Wetherspoons than I can now.
If I liquified my assets, I could buy roughly 800 pints of Guinness in Oz, or I could fly back to the UK and, after paying for the flight home, still buy 1257 pints of Guinness!

Re: Beer Economy
Maybe one reason why most people here seem to drink around the pool or BBQ with friends, instead of down the pub with friends ?

Re: Beer Economy
I don't think that relates to whether Australians prefer to socialise by the pool or BBQ compared to inside a pub
If it was only down to cost, there are plenty of places they can go inside and drink at low prices, probably similar to UK prices.

Re: Beer Economy
I'm sure whether people prefer to socialise at home or down the pub probably has a lot more to do with their age, circumstances and where they live rather than their nationality. Certainly no shortage of patrons paying pub prices where I live.

Re: Beer Economy
In Perth you'll be hard pushed to find beer at less than $7 a pint - and $9 is more the norm.
