Default Beattie backflip on Palm case

THE Queensland Government has suffered a humiliating backdown, yesterday ordering an independent review of the decision not to charge a police officer over the agonising death in custody of Palm Islander Mulrunji Doomadgee.

And people were expecting him to keep his word and not bring political interference in the integrity and processes of the DPP. He's a politician FFS. As I said in a previous thread, no side is going to be happy with the outcome, whatever the result. If there is no charges laid there will be allegations of bias towards the Police, conversely if the officer is charged with an offence, it will be seen as a political witchhunt to appease relatives and the public. In short, a lose-lose situation for the DPP(who will probably be fired or forced to resign).

According to radio interview today Attorney-General Kerry Shine can intervene in anything that calls her departments duty of care/integraty into question.

Think this case definitely did as the local Attorney and the Coroner even disagreed over the cause of death. What's the point of having Coroners report if the Attorney just comes along and says no he didn't die of that it was this.

Will be interesting to see the outcome of it all.

Decency? Don't think that came into it. Maybe shame and public pressure and a need for a scapegoat for the hierarchy. After all it's easier to blame the individuals in the front line than it is a whole system.

Think he is a reflection of the whole system though as he doesn't seem Mr. Squeaky Clean Copper.
